Question:
my stricture wont mend ..whats next..

hi i had my open rny on the 5th dec 2001 and had to have a ballon dialation on the 27th due to a stricture that had formed...then for safe keeping the surgeon recommended i have it dialated again on the 11th jan as a precaution that it had begun to collapse in again when he went in he said it was a tighter stricture than the last onebut it hadnt bothered me as much...sure i was aware of it but felt more able to cope with it anyhow after the dialation on friday he said as it was so tightly closed he wants to dailate it by balloon every friday afternoon until it learns to stay open...its now only 4days after the daialtion and i can feel it blocking up already . he has assured me well get this sorted and its nothing either of us have caused ust what my body has decided to do.... now the question...how long have any of you have had to have multiple dialations for strictures and also how long inbetween were they done, also after what tme do they decide it hasnt worked and then what is the next step in the stricture solutionn...please you can be brutally honest you wont scare me i need to be prepared just in case.. thanks for your time..    — [Anonymous] (posted on January 15, 2002)

The good news is... I have never ever heard of anyone dieing from a stricture or having to have surgery done in order to get it to stay open. On the other hand, I have heard of people who have to have them dilated quite often before it finally stays open. One woman I talked to had to have 5 dilations is 9 weeks. To me, that was the extreme although it sounds like your case may exceed hers. I have had to have one done which was a little over a week ago (and I am 5 months post). So far so good although my surgeon says that it is possible I will have to have it done again (maybe 2-3 times). Take care!
