Question:
Does anyone know what the average person's percentage of weightloss is?

I've seen several different references on other sights. One says that,on average, people only lose 65% of their excess weight. Does anyone have an official answer from a professional? I started out at 280 at 5'7. Will it be likely that I will reach my goal weight of 147?    — vbenedict0208 (posted on January 10, 2002)

Any goal is possible. I started at 469 and today I am at 146.5. This surgery is a tool. All you can do is your best and the results may surprise you.

I was told by my surgeon 40% of the weight, but by my research on this site it is how much you utilize this tool. if you excercise, and eat right you can probably lose 100%. Results do vary, but I have seen time, and time again on this site that the impossible is possible.

On the day of my OpenVBG (06/11/01), I had 160 lbs to lose. As of today (7 months post-op), I've lost 120 of that. That is 75% of my excess, in 7 months. I have no reason to doubt that I will meet my goal. Perhaps 100% in one year!!

Lee, I sincerely think that the type of surgery and your commitment make all the difference in the world. I was told 3 years ago to expect to lose about 80% of the weight and then gain back about 10 pounds to stabilize. I lost 120% of my wieght, down to 109 and then gained the 10 back after trying for a year. I have been stable at 120 for 2 years. There are so many factors but I sincerely believe that some of us can loose it all while others (due to body systems, or type of surgery or whatever) might lose the 80% only that the doc says. It is SO individual.
