I am 5 months out and eaten both with no problems. I never was a big rice
eater, and prefer the other parts of chinese foods, like chicken and
veggies. Now at 5 months a piece of pizza and some salad are a full meal,
rater than pre op most of a large pie. I dont feel deprived, and am happy
with my eating and life post op. 110 pounds gone is GREAT! I do admit
eating just a couple bites the first months is tough, but that improves.
Now I sometimes worry I can eat too much...

Just forget about things like rice...period. An occasional bite after you
have eaten your protein is fine but a heavy carb does us no nutritional
good at all. I eat chinese as a post op since 8 weeks post surgery... but
by the time I eat a couple of shrimp and a few bites of vegetables... I
dont have room for the rice. You only have a limited amount of space so
fill it up first with foods that count. For that one or two tiny bites, if
they fit... white or fried wont matter, choose the one you like best. Rice
also swells in your pouch so it takes up more room than it appears... so
take tiny bites. Like I said though, just get in your protein first. The
fewer carbs the more weight we lose!

I had trouble eating both rice & pasta for several months after
surgery. For a fairly long time I just stayed away from them. Then, I found
that I could tolerate them both *most* of the time. Now, at 20 months post,
I can eat a fairly large serving of either. I'm eating a Cup of Noodles
right now (one of my favorites) & will eat the whole thing. I'm still a
little careful with rice & pasta, but usually can eat a cup or so
without any problems. I think one of the reasons I can eat so many things
now without problems is that I really followed the Doctor's diet
instructions early on & introduced new foods very slowly &
gradually. I went thru a period where I couldn't eat chicken, but after
several months that seemed to have passed, too & now I can eat chicken
fine (unless it's greasy or really dry--ick!). I think at a year post op I
could eat virtually anything I can eat now, which is practicaly anything I
want. There's not one food I consider that I "can't" eat.

I tolerate both kinds of rice and pasta pretty well at 3.5 months post-op,
but keep the amount of fried rice to a minimum... it's too fatty for the
amount of enjoyment I get from it. I can eat almost a cup of food now,
depending on how soft/wet it is.
