Question:
In the last 24 hours I have felt a crushing and full sensation after eating.

I don't know if this is considered a stricture or not. I have not been nauseated or thrown up. It's just a pain in my chest and food feels like it is sitting at the top of my throat. I am two weeks post -op open RNY.    — Brenda E. (posted on December 27, 2001)

How much did you eat? How quickly did you eat it? How long is the pain lasting? What are you eating? If you are eating 4 ounces of chicken in 15 minutes, that's probably a normal reaction. If, on the other hand, you drank two ounces of soup and it lasts for an hour, you may have a stricture or your stoma may need to be dialated. It was very common for me to get that full feeling in the throat and chest immediately post op when I ate too quicky or something too rough. My aunt, who had the surgery in November also experienced it. However, she got it just drinking water. In her case, she needed to be dialated. They did it last week and she feels great. She can eat "normally" now. I recommend that you write down what you are eating, how much and how long it is taking you to eat it. If the pain continues, call you doctor and tell him what you've experienced. If you aren't vomitting, they you probably needn't worry about dehydration. If you are moving your bowels, you probably don't have a blockage. If you get a fever or if the pain is intolerable, I'd call the doctor immediately. Otherwise, record everything, then call the doctor and see what he thinks.

I am the poster and it has been about three hours since I last ate. I feel like the pressure is easing up somewhat. I also feel like I ate to fast. Now that I am feeling better every day I believe I am trying to eat like I was before the surgery and I have to get it in my head that I can't. I will post agin tomorrow after breakfast to let everyone know how I feel. Thanks for the responses.

Hi everyone after drinking liquids for about 24 hrs. I feel whatever caused me the discomfort has passed. THis was the instructions of my nurse and so far so good. I will have to remember not to eat tooo much or too fast again. A hard lesson to learn.
