Question:
how much sugar causes dumping.

My doctor told me no more than 12 grams of sugar per serving. I am 8 weeks
post op lap RNY and I have had not one dumping episode yet following this
guideline. I would call and ask your doctor what he thinks. Every doctor
has a different food program after surgery.

Many of us are different. Some RNY patients don\'t dump. I, personally,
don\'t buy/eat ANYTHING with more than 10gms of sugar.

Well, to put it in simple terms, I can eat a medium size chocolate chip
cookie (one only!), and not dump, but a Weight Watchers dessert will start
the room spinning about 30 minutes after I eat it. So I gauge any sugar I
eat by the size of a medium chocolate chip cookie.

I had open RNY over a year ago and never dumped. Some do and some don\'t.

Everyone is different but here\'s what worked for me: I could eat any
natural fruit with no problem. I only have a problem with refined sugar. My
initial tolerance was about 6-8 grams at a time. Over time that has
increased to roughly 15-20 grams. The closer I get to 20 grams, the more
miserable I feel, but I don\'t really \"dump\" until I eat more
than that. I just feel nauseated and my stomach will physically bloat like
I ate a 3 course meal. I used Splenda at first, but now I just use real
sugar and less of it.

I have only dumped once in my 18+ months after surgery. I don\'t know
exactly how much sugar I had eaten that horrible night, but I would guess
the equivelant of several candy bars over a few hours. I know I can handle
in the area of 50 grams without dumping at all. However, I never had any
sugar over maybe 12 grams til I was more than a year out of surgery. I
don\'t consume that amount of sugar regularly & my dumping episode was
good for getting me back on track. I do still splurge occasionally &
have a 20 ounce mocha latte with half a shot of syrup; I don\'t know how
much sugar\'s in that, but I\'d guess it\'s over 50g. Now, I don\'t chugg
it right down, but sip it over a period of hours or spread it out over two
days. So, as you can see, it really does vary a LOT. Just as an aside, I\'m
very close to goal weight & my weight has been stable for over six
months.

Seeing as though you are so newly post op...as I am...I will tell you what
my guidelines are from my BTC nutritionist. No more than 2 gr of sugar
/serving IF there are more than that, check the nutritional facts label and
look at the first few ingredients. Check to make sure you dont see sugar
or high fructose corn syrup...which are the most common forms of refined
sugar...However...there are other names for sugar such as dextrose, honey,
maple syrup, molasses, raw sugar, and sucrose. Simple sugars that are
tolerated well are: Dextrin, Fructose (fruit sugar), Galactose, Glucose,
Invert sugar, lactose (milk sugar) unless you are lactose intolerant,
Maltose and sorghum. If you see more than 2 gr sugar /serv. than see if
fruit or milk are one of the main ingredients and you will be OK.
