Question:
7 weeks what to eat
I am desperate. Today is 7 weeks since my surgery. I can not find anything solid to eat that does not make my stomach upset. I feel like I am going to throw up but do not vomit. I do not have a diet to go by. All it says is at 6 weeks start to add new things and try it out. Well what new things? No veg or fruit or beef or pork until 6 months so what else is there. I have tried shrimp 4 pieces and it stayed down but the only thing I don't mind in my stomach is milk, yogart, velveta cheese, and wonton soup minus the wontons. I've eaten Wendy's chili until I don't want any more chili. Please help, what in the world should I try to eat? Thanks for you help Gwen — Gwen T. (posted on December 11, 2001)

Chicken or tuna? I would say at this point, eat what you can and
eventually, when you're ready, start trying things. Just because you're 7
wks post op doesn't mean you HAVE to eat different things if you're not
ready or they disagree with you. Just take your time! Good Luck.

6 mths with no veggies or beef. I'm sure glad I don't have your doctor. I
was given the ok after 3 weeks to eat whatever I want but of course to use
my head. I had tri-tip this past weekend for the first time (4 wks) and it
was wonderful. I don't tolerate everything but the things I do I love. My
best so far is beans, mainly bean with bacon soup and a couple of crackers,
have you tried that?. Not the most healthy but it feels good on the tummy.
chili does not. I have had green beans and corn (very little corn) and
they worked out great. I have eaten pasta even though it is bad it doesn't
make me sick. Some say to watch the carbs but I say eat healthy and take
care of you.

One thing I had a lot of at this stage was tuna moistened with a little
regular mayo. Put a spoonful on a ritz cracker, quarter a slice of cheese
and place on top and then broil in the oven to melt the cheese. I started
only being able to eat 1-2 crackers, I slowly advanced to 4. At about 8-9
weeks, I was able to eat about 1/2 of a crunchy taco from Taco Bell. I
would break off of the excess shell and enjoy. This has beef, but it's
ground and extremely easy to eat. I couldn't imagine that your doctor means
this type of beef. Although some people talk about the sugar content, I was
able to eat tomato soup just fine. It was great and something warm in my
tummy. Mashed or baked potatoes with cheese? ( In fact, Wendy's baked
potatoes with cheese added are great and easy to eat). When I was at your
stage, I didn't worry about fat/calories, etc... I was able to only eat so
little that I felt it didn't matter. My weight loss was not hindered. Carb
solutions protein bars are good in a pinch. Hope these ideas are helpful.
Please know that this stage is very short, although when you are in it, it
feels like forever!!

I had my surgery 4 years ago. My doctor put me on a high protein diet,
including chicken and beef right out of the hospital. I ate a scrambled
egg (at least part of one) the day I after I got out of the hospital. I
would also suggest a high protein shakes. (It will help with the hair
loss!) Although I can still identify with the stomach upset. I can also
identify with the Wendy's chili.

I am also 7 weeks post-op. I have trouble eating a lot of foods. I can eat
egg drop soup, hard boiled eggs, tuna, canned fruit, baked fish, peanut
butter, cottage cheese and steamed vegetables. The only thing I can drink
is my protein drink, water and tea. Everything else makes me sick.

One of my favorite things to eat is a very small flour tortilla with (taco
bell brand)Refried beans, covered with mozzerella cheese. You can add
addition things such as chicken or other veggies. Once I've got the beans
on the tortilla I put it in a frying pan with a little butter spray then
top it with the shreadded cheese and cook it until It gets golden brown
like quesadilla's. It is so yummy. This is like PIZZA for me.

Gotta agree with some of the others - 6 months without eating fruits,
vegetables, beef and pork seems very extreme. At seven weeks I was eating
a somewhat "normal" diet - a little bit of everything, taking
care to watch the carb and sugar content. Have you tried tuna?

This is what my doc recommends at 7 weeks post op for rny and ds patients.
3 cans of promote or 4 packages of SF carnation instant breakfast with 8 oz
of skim milk in each. food portion of 1/4 cup with 3/4 cup at each meal.
the food choices at 7 weeks include. American and mild cheddar cheese, 3
plain crackers, Dry cereal unsweetened macoroni/noodles and melba rounds.
You can also have hot cereal, creamed soups that are low fat and
strained, cottage cheese and baked potatoe and baby food. The eating
schedule is: 9am,11am,3pm,8pm 8 ounces of Carnation instant breakfast.
7am, 12pm,5pm 3/4 cup of food. At 8 weeks he adds fruits and fish and
some fruit nectars. I personally do not like milk and am sick of the CIB
so I went to GNC and bouught some procomplex which has 55 grams of protein
in 12 oz serving, I mix it in water and at least for now it is more
palatable that the CIB. I find I can still only hold about four ounces so
I split it up through out the day. 3/4 cup of food does not sit right. I
feel to full. I had the DS and my stomach capacity is 4 ounces. I find it
is very easy to eat crackers and other easy to process carbs. Heck. No
nutrition in that. Good luck to you. Kathy

Hi Gwen, I am 9weeks out, I just ate two pieces of toast with one slice of
turkey and one slice of lowfat cheese with mustard, I cut off the crust.
It takes me awhile to eat it, because I have to chew it really good, but it
sits well in my tummy, I also do this with the roll ups. I make chicken
chilli....its good. I havent tryed any beef yet. I tryed a piece of ham
(boiled dinner) and it stayed down good. But today I took my daughter to
Friendly's and ordered chicken casadias........bigggggg mistake. I think I
didnt chew it good enough. It felt like it was stuck and I thought I was
going to puke or die or both! It passed in about 15mins. You have to try
new things. If you cant tolerate it, try it again in a couple weeks. I
still cant eat tuna, and I used to love it before the surgery. Good Luck!
