Question:

in my chest and throat area like a tightness I know they say this is from being full but this sometimes happen with my first bite! — gerirose C. (posted on November 20, 2001)

The same things happen to me.I'm 3 months out and it still happens if I
take too big a bite of something, if I don't chew something fine enough or
if I take a gulp of liquid. I do better with sips, I cut foods into tiny
pieces and try to remember to only put very small amounts of food and
liquids in my mouth. As long as I do those things it doesn't happen.
You'll get the hang of it, you just have to relearn what works best for
you-----Good luck!

I have the same thing. I think what is going on is taking too big of
bites. I know I thought I was really taking smaller sips and bites than
before but I was still having the sensations that you describe. Then I
tried taking even smaller bites and sips, and it stopped. I really think
that is what it is. I am still trying hard to make myself take those teeny
tiny bites. It's so difficult! I have this weird thing in my mind, that
to enjoy my food I have to take big ol mouthfuls at a time and gulp my
drinks down. But if you just concentrate and slow down you come to realize
you can enjoy your food just as much by taking little bites and sips and
taking it slow prolongs that enjoyment! So that's my two-cents. Even if
you are taking small bites already, try taking even smaller bites.

I am not Post op yet, but have read many posts on this. Remember to chew
chew chew. If you are chewing to paste, and still having the same issue you
probably have a stricture, and need Endoscopy to correct it. I have heard
that endoscopy is where they stretch the opening, and that should help. I
have also heard it is a breeze, and shouldn't be anything to be afraid of.
Hope this helps.

I am almost a year post op and depending on the food, a few bites can cause
you to be full. The more water a food has, the more you can get down -
melon for example. Grapes however have lots of fiber and fill me up pretty
quickly. Meats will fill you up even more quickly. Take small bites, chew
well and at the FIRST tiny bit of discomfort - stop!
