Question:
I am losing too fast!

I am 4 months post-op and had the open Rny. I had a 70 and started at 324 pounds. I am male and have lost 98 pounds. The problem is that I am losing too fast and can't seem to slow down the weight loss. I eat as much as possible and take all my proteins and vitamins. Is there anything I can do to slow this down? I do not want to lose much more than another 20 pounds.    — Patrick S. (posted on October 23, 2001)

Congrats on your loss! If you are concerned please call you Dr. From all my readings it seems that you men seem to loose quite rapidly. Did your Dr. give you any indication of what they thought you should loose? You may want to go to the Gallery on this site and go to where you check your BMI and plug in the #'s and see what that chart says. I would still check with your Dr. if you are worried about yourself. Best of luck and take care...

I don't think you're losing too fast. I've heard many times that men lose faster than women. There is a man in my support group who lost 100 lbs. in the first 4 weeks.

My husband lost 110 in 4 months, screamed on by goal, the brakes slammed on and he bounced back to goal. I was still in the settling process from 1 year earlier! MEN! His whole zoom by goal and bounce-back was about 9 months or so. What is happening right now is a process, not the end result.

I am a woman and also four months post-op. I'm thrilled to report that my weight loss is 92 pounds! What I am doing is exercising to try and tone up a bit. These first six months are the honeymoon months of losing. BE GRATEFUL. Don't worry. Your Dr. will check you for your blood levels and deficiencies. The rest will balance back, with your Dr.'s help. Call Him or Her and discuss your concerns. As for me? I hope it continues for awhile, I set new weight goals for myself. Originally, I felt I would be happy at about 180 lbs. or so....not now :-)

Today is my 3 month anniversary, down 83 pounds. Your body will know when to stop the loss, proof is how few underweight profiles exist. As long as your feeling good relax and enjoy the ride.

First, talk to your surgeon. Then, if you really want to put on the brakes, try eating more frequently, and eating higher-calorie foods. Add more carbs and fats, like cheese sauce over tortilla chips, things like that. Don't forget a late-night snack. If dumping isn't a problem, switch to drinks with sugar instead of artificial sweeteners. Just think about all the low-cal choices you make, and opt for something more calorie-laden.

I'm of the opinion that one "can't be too thin" and one "can't lose weight too fast". lol
