Question:
I am 4 weeks post-op and all of the sudden I have no appetite...Is this normal and
what should I do about it. I barely ate a protein shake today....right after surgery I still had my appetite. Im wondering if my brain is finally catching up to my new stomach...(lol) Any solutions...? Please let me know...thanks — Melissa S. (posted on September 13, 2001)

I can totally sympathize with you. I find it really hard to
eat or drink enough. I had an assignment for a class I'm taking
where I have to do a food diary for 3 days. I was shocked.
I averaged 650 calories, 35-40g protein and I was really lucky if
I got 48 ounces of liquids in. I don't know what to say but, I try by
filling
a 24 oz glass, take a 20 oz bottle to class and I work on drinking them
until
they are gone. I have to admit that most days I don't succeed. We just
need to keep
trying. I know we aren't supposed to graze but that is the only
way I can get any amount of food in. Like I said it's only about
600 calories. You could set aside a days worth of protein and graze on it
all day until it is gone. Just keep track of what you are eating. If you
set
your food aside for the day you won't have to measure or count calories.
Good luck.
I hope it is easier for both of us to get our food and drink in.

You may find, as I did that after several months you will start to be able
to eat more. Then there are days when you can't eat as much. I have heard
this many times. Don't despair, we are said to be able to live on our
reserves for the appropriate length of time until our capacity somewhat
increases....good luck!

We were told in WLS class that it is common to lose your appetite in the
first few months postop, but that it will return. If you have nausea, I
have some good remedies for that, plus other useful into you can see/print
out at
