The only things that I needed were a comfortable pair of slippers, lip balm (Burt's Bees is the best!!!), sanitary napkins, and my phone book, oh and calling card. I can't think of anything else that I absolutely needed. I did bring a robe so you might want to consider that too.

I ended up taking a huge bag to the hospital and the admitting nurse had a fit! My bag would not fit in the tiny lockers! And as it turned out, the only things I needed were slippers, lip balm, a good book, a hairbrush and a scrunchie. I never even wore my own robe because all the IV's and stuff were too hard to loop thru it - I used an extra hospital gown instead. Oh, one thing - DO NOT TAKE FLAVORED LIP BALM! It will drive you nuts plus the smell will nauseate you. I had to trade in my strawberry lip balm for some plain old vaseline:)

One other thing I found essential that I don't know if it'll be on the list is Listerine (or any other brand) breath strips, especially for after the leak test. That stuff you drink is foul, and the strips really help get rid of the taste. My surgeon said they're fine because they dissolve in the mouth, you have nothing to swallow, and there's no sugar in them. I agree you should keep your packing to the minimum, but I did enjoy getting into my own gown after the IV came out (which for me was as soon as I passed the leak test and showed I could drink without being sick). You might also invest in a good, simple haircut that keeps your hair out of your face and doesn't take much to keep it up. I had a cut like that and it still looked pretty good the second day after surgery, when I was able to take a shower. I think it's one reason people kept telling me I didn't look like I'd just had major surgery, and that really kept my spirits up! Best of luck with your surgery!! Chyrl Lap RNY 11/13/03 -30 pounds

I took a fan with me to the hospital and I'm so glad I did. I was always hot so it made me feel cooler so I could rest more comfortably. That was the one main thing I wouldn't of wanted to be without.
