Question:
Has anyone actually had RNY and felt like they haven't had surgery?

I had RNY on Feb 18, 2010.I had pain the day of surgery.I was in the hospital 2 nights.I only feel a little sore around the incisions.I have not been sick or anything and I just find it so weird. Is this normal? I also have not been hungry but of course I make myself drink drink drink. When will I get the full feeling? I have been getting the little stomach hiccups if I drink to fast.    — davonjack (posted on February 26, 2010)

Well, I am pre-op so I can't answer your question. I can say that this is good to hear. I hope I feel as good!

I had my surgery in Oct. 2007 and was in the hosp. for 2 nights, they kept trying to push pain meds on me but I was in no pain, I felt great. I have yet to feel hungry so you are fine. When I got home, I had to remember to eat but then after 2 weeks of liquid I was so ready to have some "real" food, even if it was "mush" I was so ready for anything other than jello and soup. Keep up the good work and let this tool work for you!!!

It sounds to me like you had the surgery. You are slightly sore and you're not interested in food. What were you expecting to feel like? I had very little discomfort, I was up walking shortly after waking from surgery. I only had meds for pain once after I woke from surgery. I had minimal pain from gas...what I had was relieved by laying on a heat pad. I am over 1 1/2 years post op and I have never thrown up food nor have I dumped. It took me less than a year to reach my personal goal weight and only 2 months to reach my goal of being off my pre surgery medications. Please PM me if you have any questions. Good luck on your journey!

Well first let me say "congrats" ! I had Lap RNY Jan 4th 2010 and felt quite a bit of discomfort from the incisions (particularly the one from the drain) but kept expecting to feel "pain from the inside of my stomach and I didn't. I too thought to myself "I wonder if they really did the surgery" inside?" I think somehow I thought it would hurt to drink.. the new stomach might be tender or something, but I had no internal pain other than my incisions. I'm now doing well. I've only thrown up 3x.. and that's from overeating. (I've found that I can only eat lunch and do protein shakes for breakfast and dinner) otherwise I am too full to eat anything for dinner (and by eat, I mean soup and applesauce). I'm -57.5 lbs and feeling good. I hope everyone has a great journey but know that if you are wondering or worrying, you can find a lot of support and answers from the "experts" on this site. I really appreciate what everyone has taught me !

Ditto for me. No pain other than the first day. I was walking all around our campground in about 8 days. Good luck!

People like us are known as the "poster children" for RNY. I had surgery in aug 09, 2 hrs surgery, woke up in recovery and by 4 pm was wanting to get out of bed. never touched the morphine pump (dont do it unless you really have to) went home in 2 days and the following day i was looking at new apartments, sure i was tired and sore... but that was it, back to work in 2 weeks and it would have been sooner but i took vacation days. I have thrown up 1 time and that was my fault, I ate too fast... no dumping... of course i am careful about what i eat... i am 6 months out and 101 pounds down. not ever really hungry... i think its just in my head when i do think i am. GOOD FOR YOU!!!!! Good luck, you will be fine. Martha J.

I had minimal pain from the actual surgery, but I have had a ton of problems with protein and throwing up, not dumping. This is my second time in the hospital since my surgery with severe stomach pains, no fun. Now, ask me if I would do the surgery again, in a heart beat.

Natasha: Good for you...this is all wonderful news!!! Why pray tell would you be looking to feel lousy. As another poster said, consider yourself a poster child for great success! I am now nearing 9 weeks postop and I felt similar to you (initially). I only had an overnight stay in the hospital post-RNY and came home at dinnertime the following day with minimal pain (just lethargic and tired, but I still am sometimes). However, watch what you eat and how fast. As others said, if you eat too fast, too much or some of the wrong things trust me you will know ... you will dump, vomit or feel that incredible "discomfort". I know b/c although it has only happened a few times it HAS happened and each time that it does you promise yourself you will never again eat "THAT" food again, but as my surgeon and nutritionist has said it is always hit and miss and sometimes the food is okay and goes down well and the next time, nada, not so good. So you just have to be grateful for the small things. Just remember each and every time you get on the scale -- the numbers are going down and this evidently is THE tool that is helping you move toward a better quality of life. Good for you ... and best of luck on your personal journey. We are all here to help. ~Trish

Omigosh, Natasha, I totally feel the same way!! ha ha. I had RNY Feb 9th, and just today started on the mushies/pureed. With liquids, I had no sense of restriction. I will say that I really began to get hungry toward the end of the two weeks of full liquids, that was a bit of a surprise. Today's mushies have stayed down fine... but I was happy that they did seem to "stay with me" a little more than the full liquids. My small amounts of blenderized food satisfied me more than the plain protein shakes and cream of wheat had. It's funny, you hear so many horror stories of vomiting with just water, needing to lie down a lot, etc etc but like you, I've felt pretty chipper after the first few days. This surgery doesn't have to be a major deal, apparently. I actually took three weeks off from work (had a lot of time saved up) and the past several days I've been really bored out of my skull, ha ha! Looking forward to getting back to "normal" on Monday. Just a little concerned about fitting in my mushies with my work day, but that's why God invented tupperware and microwaves, I guess!! Congrats to you on commencing this glorious journey... a year from now you'll wonder why you didn't do it sooner. Good luck with everything! Here's to never being sick, if we stick with our plan!!

your so lucky i had surgery 2-2-10 and i m still pretty sore in my abdomen and feel nausea alot. at this point i am not happy yet, but i hope things will get better quick. I had to take 6 weeks off from work. There is no way i can go back right now. I wasnt expecting this. Consider yourself lucky. Maybe I was just too heavy to feel good post op.
