Question:
drinking with meals

Does anyone drink with their meals? If not how long do you have to wait before your meal and after your meal to drink anything?    — cuppaloopy (posted on November 6, 2009)

I have not had my surgery yet. However they told us not to drink anything 1/2 hr before or after meals.

I have to take a couple little sips with mine and after, I do not guzzle. But, I have to get the food taste out of my mouth. Never caused me any problems.

I was told it is a big no no to drink with meals, but I almost always sip some. It just makes food "go down" easier for me. Not a lot of fluid, just a sip.

Hi!@ Many clinics use the 30 minute rule, tho my clinic says 30 mins before and an hour after. It really is important not to drink with meals as it washed the food out of the ouch and will eventually cause you to feel hungry faster. Also if the food goes thru too quickly, you won't get the full enefits from the nutrients as it will pass too quickly thru. Does this makes sense? Most of the people who I have spoken to who have gained weight back,. drink with or right after meals. It really isn't a hardship to stop the drinking, once you train your body.Best of luck to you! hugs,Kim

My surgeon also says no drinking 30 min before/after up to 1 hr after. Occasionally I will take a tiny sip if I've eaten something salty. In addition to what Kim said, drinking not only washes out the food and its nutrients too quickly, drinking with eating is equivalent to forcibly washing out the food which can stretch out the stoma. And you know this would be an even bigger concern as you would lose the ability to hold food in at all, never have satiety, etc.

The 30 minute rule after weight loss surgery is really important. You dont want to wash the food through - you want it to sit so you can start know what it feels like to be "satisfied" not full. If you ever feel you NEED to have a sip of water to wash it down then youve eaten too much, eatene too big of a piece or eaten too fast..... Bes tif you make this cahge now along with all the other changes and make the most of your WLS from the very beginning and develop alll the good habits...

The standard answer is 30 min before and 30 min after. I don't worry about what I drike before but I am very careful about not drinking with my meal and waiting 30 minutes after. For many drinking to soon after can cause dumping but for the rest of us it just makes you hungry because it just washes the food right through instead of giving your stomach time to digest it.

I strongly advise against it... I am one of those that started doing that and for it (and a few other bad habits) I have regained 60 pounds!!! I am struggling now to get back on track, but that is one of the first and most important corrections I am making. That and absolutely no soda!!!

I have a couple of pills I have to take in the mornings with food... so I drink just enough water to get them down, a sip or two. But basically, I think that what everyone else is saying is true for the most part. My surgeon says to stop drinking 15 minutes before meals and do not drink again for an hour after.

I knew i would ahve a problem with this before i ever had surgery. So i practiced way before.I have got to where i don't even make my self anything to drink when i eat. If I do anything i will sip JUST enough to wet my tongue. That way nothing goes down to my stomach. It works really well.I don't drink 30 before or 30 after. It is a bad habit to break because i ahve always been one to have that last big gulp when i finish eating. Now that i think about it,that was probably alot of my wieght problem.I drank alot while i was eating.Best wishes to you.
