Question:
Eating more as years pass?
I am getting my date for surgery (RNY) tomorrow and know that you are able to eat very little at a time. As years go by, does your pouch stretch a little to where you are able to handle more types of foods? — jtaormina (posted on January 13, 2009)

Over time you are able to eat more and a wide variety of foods. You need to
develope good eating habits in the first year.

Yes...You will eat more like a regular HEALTHY small person...(I have seen
some small people eat poorly!) It always catches up to them in the end
though!) You have to eat healthy food and make good choices when eating.
You cannot eat til you are full or your pouch continues to stretch...You
must manage portion control and not allow junk foods back into your diet as
a regular staple food. It's quite rewarding to eat a balanced healthy diet
of natural foods...You will see it in your weight, your skin, a more
youthful, healthy glow; your hair will be shiny and nice texture. And you
will feel awesome!..Sugar and junk is not good for the skin, hair or the
diet!
Once your weight loss stops 1-2 years...you need to stay at the amount you
are eating to maintain your weight long term...Anything extra you add, can
cause weight gain....Many people find that if they add sugar back, they
gain...It's all about the choices you make though...When you shop at the
store, you can't throw cookies and cakes and chips and dips and soda back
in the cart...You need to throw in fruits and veggies and whole grains,
nuts, seeds, beans, eggs, sf items, vitamins and learn how to make meals
using these ingredients rather than reach for the bagged and instant foods.
It's work! It's patience and comittment...and exercise too. But there is
no need for deprivation unless you have no good self control. You need to
stay away from food and situations that trigger an eating binge. It's not
the same year long diet...It changes and it's forever...Stay in contact
thru a support group...ask for help when you need it...WLS people are TRULY
the ONLY ones who know what you are going through and have the patience to
want to help you figure out what might be wrong when things are not right.
Docs and surgeons nuts don;t know because tehre are no long term
studies...BUT WE KNOW...WE live it! If one person doesn't know...there is
someone else who's going thru what you are or has experienced it. Once you
stop losing...It's very wise to use measuring cups and spoons and scales to
weigh foods to one suggested serving size...Or smaller! Journaling food is
also soooooo helpful especailly to keep honest with yourself and your
choices. WHen you journal your food, you KNOW waht you are eating and
cannot deny the numbers in your head! KNOW your limits...and don't go over
them. Eat til you are no longer hungry...There are no rules about eating
all that's on your plate...YOU ARE ALLOWED TO LEAVE FOOD! AND you are
allowed to throw it away! YES YOU ARE! LOL That was a hard thing to do
since my mom taught me about starving kids all over the world! It's NOT
your mom's plate anymore! I still feel guilty throwing away food...SO...I
do not buy or take more than I need! Eat to live...no more living to eat!
Good luck! And just move along at your own pace...take it slow...no
rush...a year seems forever...but it goes so fast and by then you'll be a
thinner, healthier, happy person! Blessings for a speedy recovery and
smooth journey!!
