Question:
Please tell me this will get better??

One month s/p RNY. Was just hospitalized for 10 days for dehydration and malnutrition.Vomiting and diarrhea for 2 weeks. Stomach pain half the time. Surgeon put in G tube to old stomach to feed me in the mean time. Why did I have this surgery!!!!! Can alyone relate?    — hannahsmom1014 (posted on October 4, 2008)

Yes, I can relate. Had my surgery August 12 and am still recovering. My G-tube was removed 5 days ago. I had serious complications, a second surgery, and had to be fed through my G-tube for quite some time. I remember thinkikng to myself that I wished I'd not made this decision. I had such regret/remorse. To be perfectly honest with you I have not reached the point where I can say I'm glad I did this. (I don't think I'll ever be able to say I'd do it again!) But there is a light at the end of the tunnel. You WILL overcome this. I wish you the best.

I am 6 weeks s/p RNY and I can't really eat anything without it hurting my stomach; I can eat sugar free popsickles without pain, but that is it. I have huge, constant gas that smells terrible, weird, frequent stools (tiny amounts each time) and am utterly miserable. Any advice here? Maggie

I have not gone through this myself, but my neighbor went through the same exact thing. It was a long road for her but she did come around and now is fine. Her going through all of the problems you are going through is the very reason I choose the lapband instead of the Rny. Hang in there and we will keep you in our prayers. Their will be light at the end of the tunnel.

I'm only about 12 weeks out of LAP RNY BUT...I still have my "cast iron" stomach but I have learned a few things. There are certain things that give me diarrhea and if I eat too fast or don't chew it up like I'm supposed to I have pain and vomiting. I learned that drinking is more important than eating if I was hot. That is not to mean I didn't drink protein shakes or eat a little but no more than a couple of small well chewed bites. If you see me anywhere I either have something to drink with me or am looking for one. This is the best thing I have ever done for my self and would do it again in a heart beat. I've found chunky soups work well and you can add unflavored protein to them. Just pay attention to your body and drink! Eat slow and chew well. Take time to actually taste and throughly enjoy the food, this will give your body a chance to tell you when to stop. Don't eat and drink at the same time.

I can't personally relate as I have had LapBand and in times of trouble, thank goodness I can get the fluid out and rest and get a refill. As a nurse who has taken care of many of you both in the ER before admission and afterwards as a home health nurse, I completely understand what you are going through. Hopefully, we are all made very aware that complications can and do happen. You always hope you are in the percentage of people who makes it through without them, but, it has to happen to somebody and unfortunately it was you. The good news is that you didn't have blood clots going to your heart, lungs and brain or massive infections to deal with as these do happen as well. (A little glass half full speak there)... I try to find a bright spot if I can. I understand if you can't right now as you are in the thick of it. Most likely you will heal and improve very slowly day by day and it is going to take a while. I know many RNY people who were completely miserable for at least 6 months and repeatedly asked themselves "what have I done"? Then, all of a sudden things started to get better, they became able to eat and drink without pain and could tolerate it. They got a little more energy everyday and began exercising a little bit. Only at about a year out were they actually able to look back and say... I'm ok now and even though it was miserable, I've lost ____ amount of weight, I no longer have diabetes and high blood pressure and I'd do it again. One month out, you are probably just trying to make it through the day and can't even think about 6 months or a year from now and I get it. Hang in there and God willing you'll be there too in time. Take it hour by hour, day by day and keep us posted, we are always here. Do you have a good support system at home? Dawn Vickers, RN, BLC, CLC

HI! I can relate to the dehydration part. Sorry you are having such a hard time. I know that when I was dehydrated it took me 3 weeks to get rehydrated. I drank more than the 64 oz that is required. I drank like 80 oz...I wanted to give my body the chance to take in as much as possible. Eating was not a priority. I had uncomfortableness, but not pain. I haven't vomited yet, and hope not to, but I have had bouts of diarrhea. Not really sure why...other than certain things go right thru me. I stay away from them now. I am 3 months out from RNY. hope you can take something positive away from this. It does get better! Once you start to lose the weight, you will feel better! Keeping you in prayer! hugs, Kim
