Question:
slow weight loss right after surgery
Hi there - it is me again - I am now 14 days post op - I lost about 12 pounds the first week and NOTHING this week - I am eating as much as I can - tolerating pureed food, drinking milk, getting my fluids in. I seem to be able to get in about 750 calories a day and 50 grams of protein - I do get my protein in so I am confused - any ideas? — machre (posted on December 31, 2007)

...don't forget the exercise...get up and move around! You can do it,
you're sticking to it...it'll work for you. Happy New You in the New Year!

It will take more time. Remember to drink at least 48 ounces of water
daily, take vitamins and calcium, and exercise. I walk about 1 1/4 miles
once or twice daily, and that seems to work OK for me. I had surgery in May
2006, have lost over 130 pound, now weigh 203 and am 61 years of age.

Wow! 12 lbs in a week is amazing! Did you do a liquid diet before surery
and lose a significant amount? That's what happened to me. I lost 16lbs
before surg, and then I have lost 18 lbs in the three weeks since. I think
the initial weight is water weight, anyway. I have been reading posts on
here about people who lose 30lbs the first month or 45 lbs the first 5
weeks. Awesome! But I am more of a slow and steady loser. Try not to
compare yourself to the others on the board, otherwise you will become
obsessed and focus on the wrong things. Focus on the healthy lifestyle
changes, what YOU can eat, how much and what YOUR doctor wants you to do.
You are really doing amazing!! God bless...

Thats awsome that you have lost 12lbs already.. The same thing happened to
me as you. for two weeks I lost nothing and its frusterating because you
know your not eating much but then I read that our bodies go int starvation
mode and is hanging onto everything and that eventually it gives up and you
will start losing after two weeks.... So hang in there and it will come
off...

How funny to read you post, I had surgery 12/13/07 and have only lost 16
lbs since. I was just telling my husband that I feel like I'm failing (even
though I'm not eating much). It makes me feel better to read others are
finding the samething. Hang in there...they tell us it will happen
(sometimes it's hard to imagine). Have a happy new year, keep me updated
if you get time.

Shake things up... start exercising or change what you are doing and make
sure to get in the recommened ounces of fluid.
And most importantly... have patience.

Hang in there. My surgery was Nov. 1st, '07. I have lost 'only' 31# in 2
months. BUT, my co-morbidities have just about all ceased. I am losing
slowly, but my overall health has GREATLY improved. I know when you read
the posts from people who lost 50-60#s the first 2 months- it is really
depressing, especially because you are not eating much at all, but just
hang in there. The weight will come off-

Thanks for all the support - i know i need to be patient, but it is tough
when i am doing everything i am told. Eating what i should, walking 1.5
miles a day, drinking at least 60 oz of water a day - i will be more
patient and try not to compare myself to other - but you are right, it is
tough. thanks, joanna

My loss has been relatively slow, and it can be frustrating. I came home
from the hospital weighing 8 lbs more than I did pre-op. At my 1 week
post-op visit I was still 2 lbs more than pre-op. At the 2 week visit I
was only 1 lb below pre-op weight. And that is after nothing but liquids.
Fast forward to now (I will be 6 months on 1/5) and I have lost 72 lbs. I
know many people lose faster, and it is hard not to compare, but if you
just keep on keeping on, doing all the right things it will happen.

Joanna,
Great job keep it. The weight will begin to drop off. Milk -- that is an
interesting one as well -- it doesn't give you gas? Keep on the fluid
intake -- you might want to increase your protein to 70 and increase the
fluid intake and remember to do something that will keep moving. Don't
become discouraged, you are doing great. Congratulations on your new
weight loss life -- trust me it will change your life --it most definitely
has mine.

At 2 weeks that actually really good. At 2 weeks I had only lost 10lbs. My
doc said I was right where I needed to be, he said when I came back at my 6
week, I should have lost about 30lbs...and low and behold I had lost a
total of 30 by then. Also in reading your profile you seem to be a light
weight (only 212lbs to start?). Also what I tend to see is the larger you
are the bigger the initial weight loss. But no worries it WILL come off
just wait and see!
