Question:
Anyone eat before 2 weeks up?

Ok, I'm here again. I'm so sick of the liquids, I'm ready to add hot sauce to them to get some flavor, ha. My doctor said I had to go 2 weeks with liquids only, the doctor before this one said 4 weeks. oh am I so glad I'm not with him, anyway, has anyone eaten sooner than the 2 weeks, if so what? I need ideas on recipes for when I start eating, is there site dedicated to post op recipes? Does anyone eat potato chips post op? I am 1 week out and 22 lbs. down, I'm walking and drinking and the last couple of days I've been kind of depressed and feeling down. All of this is normal I know but it's still getting to me. I just want to put something into my mouth, I'm sick of drinking...has anyone tried this without painful results? I know I sound like a big baby and I'm trying, I really am it's just something that I need to adjust to and I'm not doing so well. Like I said, I'm not hungry and watching my family eat doesn't bother me and it's funny because I'm addicted to the food network now but that doesn't bother me either, I just want to put "real" food into my mouth, not liquid. Ok, sorry for the long "question" but I'd appreciate your answers. Thanks.    — PAWLLA L. (posted on November 6, 2007)

Have you thought about freezing some of your liquid so you could eat it with a spoon? I know it's not the same but it might make you feel better. After I had my RNY I ate cottage cheese, yogurt, protien bars, soup. I am 4 years out now and can eat anything. Yes, I can eat potato chips. I would not recommend it because you can put weight back on. I got down from 247 to 137, now I am 155. I have been 155 for about 2 1/2 years and I decided that this is probably just the weight my body is happy at. But if I start munching I notice the scale does creep up. Happy losing! Enjoy!!!

I'm right there with ya girlfriend! Since I have been home all I want to do is watch food network!!! My hubby thinks I'm nutty, but like you said it doesn't bother me at all. I too wish I could just EAT something, anything. I never want to see SF jello or pudding again. Keep in touch, sounds like we need to chat to stay out of trouble.

I did actually eat before I was supposed too, BUT I was very careful and ate only extremely soft food, I.E. tuna, mashed potatos, yogurt, I was very careful and cut very tiny and chewed everything until it was like liquid, but I am not saying you should cheat like I did....It is always best to do exactly what your surgeon says. There is reasons they want you to eat in stages. Hope this helps....

Hey I will tell you I am about 9 days post op, and we have a dietician that we can email questions, and you laugh about the hot sauce but what i have been doing besides my proteins shakes is boiling chicken to make my own broth and have been adding spices, cajun spices are my favorite and soul food the dietician said it was ok to try spices, just to remember which ones bother you. Also 2 weeks after the surgery we were told to start with soft proteins like scrambled eggs, egg salad and then move on to things like chicken salad, etc.... hope it helps

Hi Pawlla, runny instant mashed potatoes with a slice of cheese melted into the potatoes are AWESOME!!! Vienna sausage is good to eat now for you as well. Best wishes, Mickey........

Hi, I'm 4 days post op and I'm wanting more then liquids too. I heard it was hard to get down 2 oz of food after surgery but I can put back 2 oz of soup or pudding no problem. I can not wait until I can eat something with texture.

I remember those times well. It is hard but your pouch is in its healing state and they tell us to stick to the guidelines for reasons.... not just to make us miserable. I lived off bacon and bean soups - pureed. Same for broc. and cheese, potatoe soups. It made me feel like I was actually eating something with flavor. Good luck and at this point don't worry about potatoe chips. I am 6 months out and eat popcorn almost nightly and once in a while Pringles.

please keep in mind that your stomach is healing from major surgery -- that is the purpose of the liquid phase -- so your stomach can heal -- not so you can lose weight -- please try to keep that in mind i won't answer your question about chips

The liquid phase is for HEALING. The nerves in your stomach will not usually let you know you are 'full' post-op so it would be very easy to rupture your pouch. Some people don't get the full 'sensation' until 4 weeks out, so you have to be careful. The limitations are for healing. Measure twice. Eat once. Vomit never!

I agree with the previous post, Pawlla. Follow your doctor's orders, do not cheat! Potato chips are a no now and forever. This is the time when you are really learning a NEW WAY to eat -- don't reach back into the old destructive habits that got you (and us) to the point of having surgery! Hugs, Jas

At 2 weeks out I was allowed pureed foods. I ate cream of wheat, oatmeal (instant, plain) and grits. You just have to make them soupy. You can put splenda, butter substitue (Brummel & Brown yogert is good) vanilla, cinnamon, whatever you like to flavor them. I also ate small curd cottage cheese, scrambled eggs, SF ice cream. At 3 weeks I tried refried beans with some shredded cheese and sour cream. I also had really creamy mashed potatoes. It was like a gormet meal! Every doc and dietician are different so listen to them, but those are ideas for you for when you can progress to pureed foods. Also, I am 8 weeks out from RYN and I have eaten a few tortilla chips. Not really wanting to try the greasy Lays or any of those. I know its hard. The first week I kept seeing commercials for pizza and Arbys. I dreamt about Arby's one night! It was really sad. :) Just hang in there, good things are on the way. Just make sure to select good things that are high in protein. Good luck!!

It's best to follow your surgeon's protocols, particularly because the staff is trained to track you for digestive issues that will arise as you follow those food items. When you can eat pureed and then soft foods, I would tend to stick with protein items-- it is tedious but now is a great time to start re-orienting your mindset to very conscious eating (where you try to choose foods for nutritional needs and not for easing boredom or stress). As a result, I would not (and did not) eat oatmeal, mashed potato or sugar free ice cream (no, or relatively little, protein and high in carbs which will undermine weight loss). I would (and did) drink protein shakes (the low-carb, high protein ones), but needed to experiment with very small sips because the fiber content caused me lots of discomfort. As for chips and pretzels, they tend to go down very easily-- they taste good and they can ease late night boredom and cravings. All the reasons to avoid them, particularly if they were ever a problem food in the past.

I'm 3 weeks out as of today and I felt much the same way you did. I wanted something with texture and something more satisfying. The urge to chew was big for me. I called my dietician and asked if I could move forward and they gave me the go ahead. I had the most satisfying meal of cottage cheese, and I usually hated cottage cheese. I've also done Malt-O-Meal hot cereal, added some Splenda to it though and it was Heaven! I would blow off the chips though. It's just a bad habit you don't want to start. If you've went this long without them, keep it up. Once you're into more solid foods, there are healthier alternatives to that crunch you crave. Also, once you're eating more food, with texture, you may find that the chips aren't so appealing. Good luck and contact your clinic. I'm sure they'll let you advance if you feel you're able. Hugs......Cheryl

Ok, I will risk getting shot for this: I remember having the same feeling. I make all the meals in my home, so I was cooking all sorts of food when all I could have was liquid. So one day, I grabbed a chunk of meat, chewed and chewed and threw the piece of food in the garbage. Took care of the craving and it did not come back again. Yes, I can say I tasted but didn't swallow.

I can sympathize with you, Pawlla, but I think you need to follow your surgeon's advice. I would also agree to contact your dietician. Also, try http://www.bariatriceating.com/ for some great recipies and ideas. Good luck!

I found a book on bariatriceating.com that is loaded with recipes, from beginning stages to holiday meals. It is awesome. I got a great recipe out of there for homemade cinnamon applesauce and an alternative to pizza. It has no crust and is loaded with different cheeses and meat. TONS of protein per serving and it had the taste of a pizza and somewhat like lasagna. Check it out, it might help. Also, to each his own but oatmeal is very healthy and filling. It does have some protein but you can make it have more by making it with milk and adding powdered milk (or maybe even protein powder if you like that, I didn't try that). It is healthy for you and it was one of the top things listed on the list from my dieticians for pureed/soft foods. You do what you feel is best. Protein is your goal, but sometimes you just want something a little different. You can make a "shake" with SF ice cream and/or yogurt with milk and it has protein in it as well. Again, good luck!! There are all sorts of options so don't beat yourself up. Oh, also I did what the previous person said. I wanted to chew SO badly, I took a bite of something and chewed it up then spit it out. It sounds gross, but it tasted great and took that desire away. May not be the best thing and I didn't do it but a couple times, but it helped.

Hi I am 3 weeks post op. I cook for my husband or sometimes he cooks for himself and everything smells extremely good to me. All I see on TV are those Pizza Hut and Papa John commercials and I am so craving a slice so bad. :-) Anyway, I also have chewed on certain foods and spit them out in the garbage, it really helps with the cravings. Nasty but helpful.

!!!ALWAYS FOLLOW YOUR DOCTORS ORDERS!!!! Mine was clear liquids for 10 days. I err expanded that to include a occasional fudgecicle after about 5 days. Told my surgeon later he said he could live with that:) My wife who also had the RNY chewed very well some pizza toppings while on clear liquids:( NOT RECOMMENDED!! They didnt bother her, But if your going to cheat CHEAT RESPONSIBLY! A long time ago a member here ate beef jerky during clear liquids and ended up with a leak and multiple emergency surgeies, could of died. So if someone cheats cut tiny amounts into tiny tiny bits and chew to death. Definetely nothing like beef jerky!!! Your better off following orders, its much less stressful and helps overall long term loss. Congrats on a great start! I am over 6 years out and miss the fast loss phase.

Ok, i bought a small can of Frito Bean dip and added a T of dip and an ounce of fatfree cheddar cheese to my cream soup. Wonderful and no problems, but I do stick to only 2 ounces every few hours. Pat

Congrats on the 22lb weight loss! Sounds like you are doing great. Have you tried blending soups? What about popsicles or italian ice or homemade frozen yogurt. What about jello? I make sugar free jello with 1/2 or less of the water... end up with something similar to jello jigglers that can be chewed. You might also want to check out some sugar free candy. Just make sure to let it dissolve in your mouth rather than chewing them. You've just had major surgery to help you lose weight and you are asking about potato chips... just say no. They won't kill you but they will certainly delay/reduce your weight loss. If you are going to "cheat" and eat some solid food, at least pick something healthy.
