Question:
Very Important
Truthfully is there anyone out there who did not lose more than their initial (hospital stay) weight during their whole process? I am in my 4th month of post RNY and am gaining weight. I haven't lost anything in about 2 months, I don't want to be asked questions, I just want to know if anyone else has been at this juncture, and was it another problem or was it just the way it is. I see my surgeon again at the end of this month. My whole problem is that I know personally 4 woman who have had this surgery and all have lost substantially and I have also read that it is almost impossible not to lose weight during atleast the first 6 months, so what is it? ANYONE !!! — bjkgriffith (posted on August 15, 2007)

Because of the very nature of the surgery.....If you .staple off a 4 to 8
oz pouch and re wire the collon, I think it is impossible not to lose. No
matter what you have done or not done. Iit sounds to me like the surgeon
didn't do it right. I would go to another surgeon for x rays and an
evaluation. You shouldn't go through all that misery to be the same as you
were before. No one could possibly judge you, the surgeon is the problem. I
am out one week and there is NO WAY I could possibly consume enough food to
gain or even stay the same. Good luck to you.

Are you following the surgeon's instructions to the letter? Some people
think they can still "cheat" and lose. YOu cannot. You
shouldn't be gaining weight after 4 months. I am 9 months out and at goal
weight and still losing. My appetite is back and I can eat more often but
I have good willpower. If you are following your doctor's instructions and
gaining weight, you must let him know immediately. I wouldn't wait one
more day. Something may be wrong. You should be losing almost every week,
2 months not to lose after 4 month post op is really strange.

Our support group had one of those. turned out the lady sipped dairy queen
shakes all day long at work and home. Our board has had post ops with
little loss in the past. One person drank orange juice. The OP and anyone
with these troubles should see their surgeon and nutronist, while keeping a
food diary of every single thing they put in their mouth. Mechanical
failure espically if not transected has to be checked for too. If your a
lap bander slow loss is to be expected. I feel bad for those with troubles
and my post is a attempt to help not point fingers

It seems strange to me, mabye it wasn't done right? I would definitely ask
your surgeon and mabye go to another one like previously suggested. Chin
up, and hang in there. Best of luck.

If you are medically ok, then look at what you are or are NOT doing to help
the weight loss. Remember it's a tool not a miracle diet. Lots of water
and protien with a heaping portion of exercise should jump start you again
and do the trick. First see that you don't have any medical issues of
course. Best wishes to being a speedy LOSER! LOL

You are not alone. Many people are unsatisfied with the results of the
surgery and they talk about it. Try this Yahoo Group to meet others who are

OK...I will tell you that even not following all the eating rules and
testing my limits on what I could eat as soon as I could eat. I still lost
120 lbs in 8 months. It was really impossible in the 1st few months to eat
a lot. I really think there must be a problem with your surgery not being
done correctly. I would insist on a few tests, a scope, some xrays to look
around in there.

I am having the same problem. When I had the surgery I wieghed 248, I am
five months post op but i have only lost 46 lbs. I know that I am not
overeating because I journal what I eat on the online website: FITDAY.
Also, I excercise three to five days a week. I feel your frustration, but
don't give up. My family keeps telling me to focus on the postive, I've
lost 46lbs!!!!!!!!! and I am getting flabby. Still, most of the time I
feel frustrated.

Thank you for letting me know that I am not alone. I have the same
problem. The weight is not coming off. It has been over 4 months for me
and I am only down 30lbs since surgery. I have difficulty eating many
foods. I am certainly not eating too much nor anything wrong. It is very
frustrating. I will be seeing another doctor next week for another
opinion. good luck .

What about inches? Have you lost lots in inches?

Thank you all for your honesty. I am scheduling an appt. with an
endocrinologist/metabolism specialist. I think that I will call my PCP and
schedule an xray or whatever they do to see if there's a problem. And then
maybe it's thyroid or something else. I am at the end of my rope - truly.
This surgery is actually the end of the line for most of us. I even had
the lap band for 5 yrs. prior to this surgery (self paid), and went to
Mexico to have it done. I am really depressed about this whole situation.
But it helps to know that I am not alone and I will keep trudging along.
Thank you all again

I read your second post and I think I know why you are losing weight
slowing. I have done an extensive amount of research online regarding
lapband vs. RNY and if you have had a lapband before and then have an RNY,
studies have proven you lose much slower and sometimes less. Do a google
search and type in failed lapband or lapband failures and see what comes
up. I cannot remember how I came across the article, but it said it
happens often and weight loss is much slower. I hope this helps you out.

Barbara,
I find that if I don't eat enough that I don't lose and may gain a few
pounds. Maybe you are not eating enough...journal what you eat and see if
your are consuming enough..when I eat more I tend to lose again. Weird,
huh. But I guess it is that the body goes into starvation mode and wants to
hold onto everything.
I hope this helps.
