Question:
I am scheduled to have my surgery on 7-19-07 and my husband would like to go to
Vegas Oct 13. Do you think I will have the energy to go????? — SueEllen (posted on July 13, 2007)

Yes you should be fine to go. I am 6 weeks post-op and feeling pretty well.

If you get your butt in gear after surgery, you will be fine! I was 47 when
I had my lap RNY on October 29, 2002. The next month, over Thanksgiving, I
went with a high school marching band to Florida and had a blast! Went to
the parks, chaparoned and rode all the rides I wanted to. I had more energy
and ran circles around some of the other parents that went! Since I knew I
had a month to get ready for this, I did exactly what I was supposed to
after surgery (which included eating a balanced (pureed) diet!) and
exercised - started walking the day after I got home from the hospital and
ramped it up every day. You should not have a problem going to Vegas 3
months after surgery.

I sure hope so. I am set for surgery on the 7th of August and have a cruise
to Italy and Spain on the 2nd of October. My surgeon said I should be just
fine and eating solid food by then. I sure hope he is right too. I am
interested in reading all your posts because everyone will be answering for
me as well. Thanks

Yes if you follow everything your surgeon says and walk walk walk! BUT, do
realize that there are buffets EVERYWHERE and most are NOT healthy. (I
used to live there for 10 yrs so I know this from experience). You SHOULD
avoid these as you won't be able to eat yr "fill" of the amount
most charge (they are no longer cheap). If you do go to a buffet, just
LISTEN to your stomach when it says yr FULL!!!! If you're not careful you
WILL stretch your pouch and also realize that you will need a great deal
more liquid intake than normal as it is VERY VERY dry out there! Good luck
and try to have fun!

Providing things go smoothly, you should be fine. And all that
walking/sightseeing will be great exercise! If you're putting a lot of
money into the trip, though, I would recommend insurance because you never
know what could happen. I had a perfectly successful surgery but developed
a hernia at 5 months and required surgery asap. I also echo the concerns
about the buffets - don't worry that you're "wasting money" or
whatever. Listen to your tummy! I hope you have a great time - I'd love
to go to Vegas! :) Blessings, Sarah in VA

Hello : )...first of all let me say congrats on your upcoming surgery ! I
wish you all the best & a speedy recovery. I personally had open RNY
4/06, by 7/06 I went to the river and was jet skiing and riding quads..I
was also eating solids by this time. Just make sure you follow your
surgeons reccomendations, walk as much as possible, take your vits daily,
& drink alot of water. If you are having lap-band or lap RNY / your
healing will be even considerably easier provided there are no
complications. I wish you the best (& in a sense we are surgery
partners ; ) I am having a hernia repair & tummy tuck 7/19~so we'll
both be down @ the same time !

yes, I am 5 weeks post op and going to the beach tomorrow. Just remember to
do your diet right, so you have the energy. My doc has me on protein shakes
to make sure I have energy. I also take chewable vitamins twice a day. Just
remember the little things.

By all means, go and have fun! My surgery was November and in March I flew
3000 miles to San Diego. It was great!

I had my surgery June 14 of 2006 and drove by myself from Ohio to Florida
in early August. That was after having switched from a lap procedure to an
open procedure, plus having to go back to the hospital in early July
because of an infection. So I would say three months out you should be
good to take a vacation. Have fun and enjoy yourself!!

You should be fine. You'll have 3 months to recover. I'm almost 5 months
and flew to Louisiana at 4 months. He would let me fly 10 days after the
surgery --glad I didn't buy those tickets. You will have the energy to go
and will be on solid foods by then. Just pay attention to your body. Have
fun! We're going in September let you know how we do -- we've both had the
surgery.

Energy? YES! But stay away from all the free/cheap stuff they dispense --
food & liquor.

I went on a cruise to Mexico a few months after my surgery and I did fine.
If everything goes well and you have no complications, I'd bet there would
be no problem. Just try to keep up some physical activity and eat as well
as you can. Best wishes for health and happiness.

Hi Susan, thanks for writing. I had surgery in March of 04 and about 4
weeks later we had a youth conference 12 hours drive from our home that I
went to. We went as a family, had a good time, but I did have to pace
myself. After surgery, I began to walk 2 weeks after surgery, and within 2
days was walking 2 miles every day. It was hard, but I began doing it
twice a day a few weeks after that. It built up my stamina and helped me
every day with strength and endurance. If you work hard, you will be
prepared and do fine. Prepare physically and also emotionally. The head
games after surgery are worse than the physical for many of us. Stepping
into sin city with alcohol and food temptations can be a real issue for
you. Don't go in blind. Go in with a plan, agree with your husband on
boundaries AND KEEP THEM. He has to back you up, or he will help you fail.
You can do it, and you can have a blast, just don't depend on food being
part of a blast, and most hotels offer exercise, or walk the places you
want to go. Make it a trip that will support your weight loss, not delay
it. Take care. Patricia P.
