Question:
how do you do it????

I would like to know how you make it through a liquid diet for a week especially at christmas. Eating popsicles, jello and broths just don't fill you up. I'm hoping by mid week I will be use to it. I will do it because I have to. I would like to know how other people did it or how other people are doing it now.    — cuppaloopy (posted on December 21, 2009)

I drained the broth off a Campbell's chicken noodle soup. It was just thicker than plain broth and had a better taste.

Barbara, you can heat protein drinks a little to make them taste like hot chocolate, and you can also freeze them in ice cube trays for chocolate popsicles. Gives you a little bit of variety. Drink lots of water too. It must be tough, but try not to think about it and let the time just fly by. Congrats, you're almost there!

Hi, your right it is tough. Being winter and all I still use sugar free apple cider to help me with my diet. Taste great and does't taste sugar free. Good luck and Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year.

You are not alone...the protein shake should fill you but yes its difficult....It gets easier. Strraining broth from a campbells light soup helps or a progresso light soup.....give broth a little more taste...praying we all have a Great Christmas and New Year. Try to make a list of all the things more important than food....youll find there is so much more to live for. We are so use to food being a big part of our lives and really its not....I also have a difficult time. Its getting easier. Praying you have a blessed holiday)

One more thing to add, when you went through all this pre op procedures to have this MAJOR operation, this is a drop in the bucket when you look at the big picture. Just my two cents.

It can be difficult at time, but it's your journey and you alone are responsible for it. If you can start conditioning your mind now, things might not be as hard after the surgery. My two cents, I did it because I wanted to, not because I had to. If you change your way of thinking about it, it might be easier on you. It's your first steps into a brand new life, embrace it. It's your commitment to yourself (through good time and bad). Take care and wish you all the best...you can do it...as long as that's what you believe in. Dee :D

What you tell yourself is so important to your success or failure in anything in life. You chose to have the surgery because you love yourself. We have all conditioned our thinking that our family gatherings especially at holiday times are all about the food....when it should be about family, love and the quality times we can share together. Try to shift your focus onto other things than food. Yes, it will be difficult but this is a lifetime decision, not a diet. Choose to be healthy and eat healthy for the rest of your life. The more you condition your mind now and change the way that you think about food it will become easier each day until you no longer have the same relationship with food that you once had. Am I perfect with this? Of course not. No one is. But to train the way you think about food now will keep you on track later. You will be able to immediately get back on track those times when you do cheat a little. Or think more about exchanging the foods you dearly love for healthier foods that are similar in taste and texture. That's how I re-trained my brain. Eat to live rather than live to eat. I told myself that everyday, often several times a day. And still do. Talk to yourself in the mirror about the way you think about yourself and your relationship with food. YOU are the main ingredient to making this successful for you. Believe in yourself and the power that you have in your mind. Use it for your benefit. When you drink those fluids and protein drinks just think of how gorgeous you are gonna look this summer in your clothes!!! And most importantly how much more healthy you will be. It's the best gift of all to yourself and your family. A healthier, happier YOU!!! God bless!!

I blended a light yogurt or sugar free pudding into my protein shakes - gave a bit more substance and kept me fuller.

Barb: Mind over matter, I know it sounds easier said than done. But I was so ready I was actually eager to do it. Don't let a hour go by that you don't have something to drink. I just made up my mind to do it. I was on it for a week and only had liquid protein and water before I realized I could have sugar free jello and broth. Think of the bigger picture and the gift of health you will be giving yourself.. sounds corny... but its the truth.. good luck! I know you can do it, and you will be so thrilled you did.

Know that a lifetime after your surgery will make this week of being on liquids well worth it. It may seem impossible to do but YOU CAN DO IT! I was preop the week of Easter which is another big "food" holiday, but I just stayed focused on my surgery and today 9 months later I'm 105 pounds lighter and just 10 pounds from my goal weight. I'm now off all blood pressure med, diabetic meds, no more cpap and feel better than I have in over 30 years. Hang in there and happy holidays.
