Question:
I have a patient in our practice who cannot afford protein supplements/vitamins.
Does anyone have helpful advice for people who are having financial difficulty and can not now afford protein supplements/vitamins/minerals at this time? Are there any free resources available? — PatriciaSmith (posted on November 4, 2009)

I have no cheap answer to the protein problem other then check
Walmart,Target,Costco or the other "discount" stores for sales. I
get my vitamins at Walmart and the doctor is okay with that. Walmart,
Target and Giant as well as some others have 4 and 10 dollar lists for some
prescription type meds as well.

you can let them know that their grocery bill will go down and they can
spend the food money saved on supplements..also look into store brnad
powders..some stores like wegmans has their own protein powders in the
organic and health sections.

Nuts are cheap sources of protien but the vitamins are needed. No way
around it. They are pretty cheap at walmart.

Many churches have help (both financial counseling and temporary monitary
help)for members/attendees. If your cliet is a church goer, have them
check with their church office or pastor. I know here in Houston,
Northwest Assistant Ministries does that sort of thing for anyone in the
community.

Check out GNC. When their products get within 3 months of their expiration
date, they mark them down DRASTICALLY. I called one of the protein bar
companies and they told me they are still good a month or more after the
expiration date. I've also frozen protein bars when I get a good price on
them.

If there is a Sams Club or Costco you can get great prices on protein.
Also, by buying raw chickens and roasting your own is low cost, high
protein food source. Another idea is with Thanksgiving coming up, grocery
stores will have whole turkeys on sale for $4-$10 for their store brand.
Buy however many you can store in the freezer, then roast one, debone and
freeze in small amounts to easily thaw and use in many recipes later.
Again, high protein, lower fat and extremely versatile.
One other thing she may try is online sources, such as Vitamin cottage.
They have sales from time to time that will be buy 2, get 3 free. You have
to plan ahead a bit to order, but they are high quality and well worth it.

Like others have shared already, there is a good product you can get at
Walmart. It is the huge canisters of Whey Protein, 52Grams per double
scoop serving. Buy the shaker that is right next to the product. I shake 2
scoops in 10 ounces of water, and I like the Strawberry the best, then the
chocolate. All the others are really bad tasting! One trick to taking it
is that once I start drinking it, I don't stop until it's all gone!! LOL*
At $14.88 per canister, it comes out to about $1 a day. It's low on carbs,
and has done amazingly well in turning my hair loss around.

When I'm broke, I rely on canned tuna that I've hoarded when it was on
sale. You can add it to just about any other food for a main dish, put it
on toast, or even in those 3/$1 chinese noodle soups
