Question:
Has anyone else had major changes in the way things taste?
I'm 5 weeks post rny and I now find all artifically sweetened drinks like crystal Lite or diet Snapple to be much too sweet. I have also lost my taste for coffee. — gerrifei (posted on October 15, 2008)

SOOOO normal. I had to take a 6 month education class through my medical
group and they told us time and time again that your tastebuds will change
over the course of your phases either forever or for a short while. I
cannot drink V-8 anymore - totally grosses me out. I couldn't eat cheese or
milk for a long time - grossed me out, but I can eat again. Give it some
time. You might be able to again - or not. Your body is a strange
mechanism. Complex. Good luck.

My taste changed rather early in the process and has not yet returned to
normal, though some tastes have returned. I now eat bananas, and other
fruit, but the veggies I liked so much before, like brussel sprouts and
broccoli are not good. I am still losing after hitting my all time
high...now at 136 and still dropping. I am truthfully happy to not want
cake and cookies and icecream because it keeps me thinner that way. If it
never returns, it is ok for me...I have kissed Hoagies and cheesecake
goodby. Lyn

This is normal. My taste buds change every few months. I had my orginal RNY
in 1997 and has changed all the time. I just had a revision to a ERNY on
July 2 ,2008 and my taste buds are changing even more.

Lots of things taste off for a while...I still think artifical sweeteners
are horrible! Splenda never used to bother me...I hate it now and get
stomach aches from fake sugars as much as from real sugar! So I use natural
stuff as often as possible. (Stevia, honey, pure maple syrup, fruits, brown
rice syrup) When faced with sugar or sweet-n-low...I choose sugar...But
that doesn't happen often...thank goodness! I find most stuff too sweet...I
hate fast food french fries and greasy foods are sooooo disgusting to me.
The fat coats my mouth and throat and makes me gag...Potato chips used to
be a HUGE favorite...Now I take a chip or two and taste nothing but fat!
YUCK! I eat hamburgers that I make with organic lower fat beef...but if I
order hamburger out....I end up with a belly ache...and I can taste if food
has a lot of fat or sugar and that usually turns me off immediately. Most
of my tastes have gone back to normal but I won't waste calories on
something that doesn't taste GREAT! I remember often buying something from
the bakery section and it really wasn't great, but I'd eat it anyway...NO
more! I just don't want food unless it is good and healthy. I only sample
stuff that isn't so healthy...And occasionally I over eat bad choices of
food in a rush or for lack of a better choice when out...The trick is not
to find yourself in that situation often! I hate eating out...I get so
overwhelmed/ frustrated with lack of healthy choices...Only healthy food
tastes truly great to me anymore. I never thought THAT would happen! I cut
way back on coffee too...because I used to only drink it with sugary
fru-fru...and now I drink instant coffee with two scoops of vanilla protein
every morning. Only one cup rather than two or threecups, two times a day!
I drink hot decaf (usually) teas at night to curb night munching...I have
to sip and it take a while so I forget about munching! It's helped! I could
barely stand the taste of crystal lite after surgery...But I like it again
with a ton of ice only...I still prefer plain water over anything
though...Hopefully your new tastes are for healthy foods too!

i can only speak for my sister in law. i know she had gastric bypass
surgery, i just dont know if it was RNY. she also had a problem with
sweets. she is now taking a protein shake that is not real sweet. there
is no added sugar, aspartame, or sucralose. she likes it because it is
packed with protein, vitamins and minerals. if you are interested in more
info on it let me know, i work for the manufacturer

I have had issues with things tasting different also. I keep being told
that things will go back, but I don't care if they do or not. I keep
thinking I want something sweet, but then I take a bite of something (that
I shouldn't be eating anyway) and it tastes terrible.

Everything tastes different to me. It's so weird. I am glad it's not just
me.

I am glad you mentioned this. I am exactly one week out from VSG and most
things have a bitter whang to them. Oh well...I can only have liquids at
present. I thought about liquefying a hamburger...anyone tried it? LOL
