Question:
I am 6 days post op
I'm able to eat broth and some puddings and popsicles but when I add protein to anything it makes me nausious. Not to where I'm throwing up just uncomfortable...I go tomorrow for my staples and drain out but would like some input from people that have had the surgery. Any help would be appreciated. — bridgetann1961 (posted on April 13, 2008)

Speak to you surgeon about the importance of protein. There are many types
of shakes, powdered protiens, or premade drinks or protein conentrates to
supply your body with protein. NO PROTEIN and you're in for big problems.
You don't have to add protein (what kind??) to anything, just drink a
protein enriched shake, drink or concentrate.

You definitely need to get protein in where you can since you are very
restricted so early...try adding just a little rather than an entire
serving...Even if you just sprinkle some into your puddings and
cereals...Then you can try to work your way up to adding more...Just do
your best to try to get protein in whereever you can! Good luck!

There are a lot of protien sources out there - even at this stage - and
getting your protien is VERY important, as other posts have stated. You
might want to try playing with the temperature of your protien beverages.
I, personally, need my protien to be ice cold! I get naucious when it's
lukewarm.
Others have the reverse situation, and still others are unaffected. Hope
that helps out.

I actually was restricted from proteins until the end of the second week.
It was clear non lumpy liquids the first two weeks then the begining of the
third week I was able to start with sugar free puddings, cream of mushroom,
cream of celary, and protein shakes. I would add powder milk to my cream
soups to give me more proteins and to make my shakes more enjoyable I would
add the sugar free puddings to them.. :) yummy. With my chocolate protein
shakes I would add a spoon of peanut butter and a packet of splenda I
still drink them that way and I'm 8 months out..
All doctors are different so make sure you talk to your surgeon..
Take care

Whie I was in the hospital they gave me a protien shake from Unjury made
with milk. It has a good taste and you can it on line,vn sampleof the
flaors. go to www.unjury.com, it is made for WLS patients. Don't add
powder to everything as it will just make thinks taste bad to you. It took
me a month befoe I could really eat and not feel full with just a few
bites. Yu got a lot of raw flesh healing, and it has to deal with thefood
you are taking in. Look to dairy right now for Protien also. Scramble
eggs with cheese and small curd low fat cottage cheese, or run it through a
food processor to get it smoother. Try seasoning on your cttage cheese.
It help the taste, even salt and pepper. Best of sucess to you. Your
Surgeon can also tell you other sources, but get the protien down. you
need 75 to 80 grams a day.

I also got sick from the protein. I dealt with the sick feeling until it
finally subsided give it about a month. I am 9 years post op and went
through hell with my surgery. I know people like to get away from things
that make them sick but you need protein. I found that protein wasn't the
only thing that made me sick. Almost everything did. I was unable to eat a
full meal until I was 6 months post op. Most people find they can eat their
first meal after a couple months. Once you are able to eat a bit more than
you will start feeling better.

I try to make me an instant carnation breakfast make sure it is no sugar
added and have that for breakfast that seems to go down fairly well and
today I am going to try a regular protein shake for breakfast I use the
isopuree protein it tastes about the best to me. It also has 50 grams per
serving so that helps get my protein in right away. Good Luck and hope this
helps.

Getting you protein in now is so important. I didn't get all the protein in
that I needed after my surgery and 4 months out I am dealing with horrible
hair loss and my doc says it's do to my lack of protein. There are many
types of protein you can take..keep trying to find the right one. I now use
protein shots from Wal-mart. And I would start taking biotin as soon as you
can swollow a pill.

You might try protein capsules. No nausea issues, and they don't make you
feel bloated either. They're called Capsul-Pro and you can get them at
www.nashuanutrition.com Good luck!

I am now 14 days post op -- I was having the exact same problem - I tried
every kind of protein drink and powder I could find - some were better, but
I really couldn't tolerate much of any of them. Over the last several
days, I've noticed it hasn't been as bad, and this morning I was able to
drink 8 ounces of Carnation Breakfast with soy milk with no problem at
all!! Keep trying and give it a few more days, things may get a lot
easier!

I had the exact same issue and it got to the point that I would not eat or
drink anything after trying to take my protein. What my surgeon and I
figured out was that I had a problem with Whey protein after the surgery. I
switched to Soy and all was fine. I was no longer sick and I can now get my
70+ grams a day. Best of luck to you!

Unjury has a Chicken Soup flavored protein that mixes thin. You can order a
single scoop sample and try it out. Mine haven't arrived yet but most
people rave about Unjury products - made for bariatric patients.

What kind of protein are you trying to add? Pudding, assuming you've made
it with milk, has some protein.... talk to your doc. :)
