Hi Julie, I had trouble drinking water in the beginning. My dr. said he had heard that many times. It does get better, I promise. I drink water all day now but I just have to remember to slow down. Old habits die hard. :)

I've heard from many patients at support meetingst that COLD drinks tend to bother some people. Most people are used to having drinks on ice. There is a good possiblity if you try to drink the fluid at a room temperatrure or just slightly chilled that the pain may not be there. This might be a possiblity since he just had surgery recently. If a rooom temeparture or slightly chilled beverage still causes problems, then he may consider talking to the doctor. Best to try just plaint water first. Some patients tolerated water bests, others say they can only tolerate fluids other than plain water. There is one lady in my group that can only tolerated room temperature water with a slice of lemon, or else it has to have Crystal LIte added.

It is because there is a lot of raw tissue. Try drinking very small sips and let is slide down your throut and try hot tea or decafinated tea if yuou Doctor allows it, in small sips. I takes time, and 10 days is not long enought to get over the raw tissue issue in your pouch. Best of success to you.

I agree with Dave, could be the liquids are too cold. I drank tons of warm tea and warm water with lemon for the first 2 mths after surgery. Stay away from iced drinks for a few more weeks....Good luck

Hi there Julie, congrats on your RNY! You may be drinking too fast, additionally, make sure your not swallowing air in front of your beverage. In the beginning I purchased GasX strips (still use them) and I really didn't have a problem after that. I found that not only did the beverages cause gas pain so did any foods I was eating. Good Luck

Try something very warm, like a cup of herbal tea. All I drink, for the most part is chamomile tea. I find it very soothing. I get stomach cramps if I eat anything cold. Even the yogurt I take my pills with can bother me if I eat too much of it. Sometimes I drink Crystal Light and I warm it up too. Sounds gross, but it's what my pouch prefers. Good Luck!

I had that problem with the first couple sips in the morning. It was really hard to take any vitamins because you can barely drink enough to get the meds down. I found it helpful to only drink standing up - I know that sounds strange. Does it get better through the day? Concentrate on tiny sips all day. This will lessen/go away after about three weeks. I am now at 3 months and I really hav to have to concentrate on slowing down because I can drink liquids the same as I did pre-surgery.

Julie, I had some problems with this in the beginning also. I found that you have to drink slowly and not have the fluid cold. I use to be only able to drink things cold and now I prefer them to be a bit on the room temperature side. This may be part of your problem but I would let your doctor know if I was you. Good luck.

Julie, I had RNY on the 19th (one day before you) and I am in your boat with you. Honestly I did okay with fluids before this week but the last few days have been terrible. Hot, cold, room temp, I get all burpy like and the last 2-3 days I even get to where I kind of throw up or spit stuff. It's miserable!! I am going to try the gas X thing... maybe that will help!!

Hello, I had my surgery 3/7/08 and I had the exact same problem until I learned how to drink. Hold your breath (do not inhale air - kinda let the air out first, put the bottle to your mouth (your mouth should be closed), once you feel the fluid touch your lips then open and drink slowly. Repeat. It will work. Good Luck. I have lost 23 pounds since my surgery. Stay in touch. Yolanda (Claremont, CA)
