Question:
My surgery is on 2/25. Is it necessary to be on a liquid diet this week?
I have been eating healthy all this week, but should I be on a liquid diet? How about the day before surgery? — JenP (posted on February 19, 2008)

Your doctor would have told you if he wanted you on a liquid diet before
hand. My doctor did not put me on one before or really after my sugery. I
am 2 years 10 days out and am doing great. I got my life back. Good luck
and best wishes.
Having the surgery was the best thing I have ever done for my self.

My surgeon wanted me on a liquid diet for 2 weeks prior - I cheated a
little, but I think it helped recovery a lot. You need to do what your
doctor says - each is different.
Good Luck!

You should always follow your MD's advice, but I would do a liquid diet as
soon as possible if you can. I lost 21 lbs pre-surgery and I think this
really helped with getting to know the process afterward. I won't say I
didn't cheat a little bit (unless subway makes a soup called the
"subway club". I'm 8 days out and have lost 36 lbs total, so you
can do. Good luck!!!!

For your safety and making it easier on the DR to do his job your Dr should
be putting you on a low to no fat diet . If he isnt then I would question
him.

it is very important to follow your doctors directions exactly as he/she
tells you to!!! remember that with RNY there is a lot of cutting and moving
things around so you want your intestines to be as clean as possible and
that is achieved by the liquid diet and the bowel prep you take prior to
surgery!! i am a nurse and have seen many complications come from people
not following the instructions directly or from emergency surgeries where
there was no time for prep. i had to do clear liquids for 2 days and take
laxatives for those 2 days as well. every doctor is different, but if he
does not give you specific directions you need to ask and i would at least
do clear liquids for the 2 days prior to your surgery for safety. good
luck-it's not as hard as it sounds, just occupy your mind with other things
like cleaning the house or some "fun time" with your significant
other..lol !!! Holly

What you should do is follow your surgeons directions. Each one is
different regarding what you can eat and for how long you should be eating
it before surgery.
I'm very surprised if your doctor didn't give you this information as it
was covered in detail on more than one occasion when I had my surgery in
Jan.
Best of luck to you.

It is very important to follow the instructions of your surgeon. I will be
having the sleeve procedure and am required to be on a liquid diet for
three day prior to surgery, and a friend of mine, who has gotten the RYN
was required to be on a 1,000 cal diet for 1 week prior to surgery. All
this is done, I'm told, to reduce the size of the liver so it won't be too
large to move around a be out of the way. Personally I feel it would be a
good start for post-op since you just may be on clear liquids for a few
days.

It does not hurt to try and see what you like, but usually the only day
required is th elast day when they have you take something to clean out
your intestine. Call your doctor and ask then to give you written
instructions for prepairing for surgery. Best of success with your
surgery.

I reccomend being on a liquid diet for at least two weeks. The main reason
for going on a liquid diet is to ensure a smaller liver. Going liquid helps
shrink the liver and makes the laproscopic procedure easier and you have
less chance of having to have an open surgery. Anything that will help
those odds are totally worth it. It also helps get your body ready for the
major food change you will have. Best of Luck, You will do great!

This is a huge change in life most important right now is to important to
follow your surgeon's instructions. I had my surgery Oct. 15, 2007 and was
able to eat up until that Sunday evening but at a portion size. Lot of
times if you cheat your surgeon will be able to tell when they open you.
If your liver is hanging off of a plate they use to hold it up for room he
or her may have to cancel your surgery and save it for another time. So
please follow listen to what we're telling you and follow your surgeon
instructions....
Good Luck, Best Wishes and Take Care!!!

Wanda
