Question:
Question for the women, regarding menstrual cycle

I had my surgery on 10/16/2007. My last period was on 10/6/2007, and have not gotten one since. Has anyone else had a delay in their menstrual cycle post-op????    — daisy3172002 (posted on November 12, 2007)

Ok YES, and I know it is stressful, My RNY was 9-4-07, I was on my period day of surgery (yuck) but then I had another one about 10 days later, OK, but now I missed ALL of October and still no cycle as of today!! I took preg. test it was negative, My surgeon said this is normal to miss since our bodies have undergone so much. But if you have any doubts, always best to call you Doctor and hear it from him/her. :O) Hope this helps some!! (Wish I'd have mine soon so I could get off this plateau I'm on).......Suzanne

This surgery plays with your hormones so just make sure you are on some type of birth control. Alot of women have switched methods because the pill does not always absorb well after surgery. It may take a while for your hormones to become normal again. Good luck with your journey. Paula Chumbley

Not to worry. Unfortunately, it will come back on time. LOL!

I agree, it is normal, but check with your Dr on this. I do Know it does "wreak havoc" on your hormones and the "pill" issue mentioned above might be well worth looking into. I am 9 months out from RNY and "what the Heck" is a normal period? Ok, Ok, being 50 might have something to do with it, so maybe I'm double "Whammied". LOL..... But, seriously, do talk to your surgeon, GP or Gyno, most are up to date and "should" be well informed on the differances of RNY patients. Good Luck!

I was told at pre-op class the meds they give you to prevent blood clots probably would cause you to have your period, so I was a little worried when I was 2 weeks late. I DID finally have it, but it was short and not very heavy. This months was a little better, not that being on your period is better. :) I guess I should say more "normal." Don't fret, it will happen. But when in doubt of anything ALWAYS call your doc! Good luck!!

I was a week late with my period and I did not loose any weight the week of or the week before.

This is so weird to read...as I had my surgery 10/17/07, had my last period 10/06/07 and had a lap RNY..and still have yet to get my period again. I swear I was reading a post that I put on here! I'm glad you wrote about this.... as it was great to see what people had to say. Thanks and hope that you and I both get our cycles straightened out soon! I know I'm not pregnant....but I know I'd feel better if I had a cycle. Good luck and congrats on your surgery! Hugs.....Cheryl

Delay, I wish! Since my surgery my menstrual cycles have been more on time then they have ever been. So if you miss -- one don't worry -- unless you think you're pregnant.

Yep, missed a month, and then it came back...completely normal, but as other's have said, if you're concerned, contact your surgeon. Good luck, God bless and welcome to the losing side!

Hi Melissa, thanks for writing. A Menstrual cycle can be changed by rapid weight gain or loss. People who are obese many times do not have regular cycles. If you did, the change in weight can also throw off your mensus. You want to be very careful in regard to getting pregnant during this big transition in weight and body change. I assume you had an RNY, and the lack of absorption can cause real problems with a developing baby, so be careful about that and take extra precautions if you can. Having said that, if you are taking all the precautions you can, your cycle may be playing catch up for several months as you regulate your diet and exercise patterns. Don't give up, and stay on top of your cycle changes by keeping track of them. If you have missed more than six weeks, you might want to get a blood test just to be sure you are not pregnant or get at in home test. Little surprises happen all the time, but especially with an RNY I would be careful about pregnancy for the first two years. Thanks. Patricia P.

I agree with everyone saying your horomones are out of whack, but (not to be too personal) if you are having sex at all TAKE A TEST! I know several people who have become pregnant very early postop.
