Question:
I am really curious...a glimpse into the future please?

I am only 5 weeks post-op today and struggling to get my protein and water in, but for the most part doing ok. My question is; what can I expect to be eating when I am (say) six months post-op? Can i eat more? will i be able to tolerate things like a granola bar? I guess what i want is a glimpse into the future. As of right now, I feel sick every morning, it does go away by afternoon, but will this get better too?    — kittyluver77 (posted on May 3, 2007)

It's according to your doctor, but at 5 weeks out, you should just be starting real foods. Make sure whatever you eat make sure you chew it to death, make sure it is moist, and make sure they are small pieces. You may want to call the doctor and tell him you are sick in the morning. I am not quit six months, and I can eat whatever I want. What I want more than food is losing my weight once and for all. It's all according to what type of surgery you had But you need to talk to your doctor. Good luck, Diane

I have been on regular foods for 3 weeks now...I guess my surgeon does it differently, we go on regular diet on post-op day 14. I can tolerate a variety of foods, but I am wondering if it gets better later.

I am 6 months out and can eat many many things...my appetite has increased and I can eat more often. I know it's very dangerous! I used to get sick and couldn't tolerate much in the beginning, it's really better now.

Keep the faith! It gets so much better. I am 13 months post-op, down 156 lbs. I have surpassed goal. :) I think the magical month for me was 6 or 7. My appetite came back and food really became enjoyable again. The best advice I can give (besides always following your docs orders) is to chew everything very well (it will become second nature, trust me) and to listen to your body. If you want to try something new, go for it! But take a small bite, chew well and wait and listen. Your body will tell you if it's too soon or if it's ok. I can eat anything I want now, even sweets - it's just that after WLS, I have learned this cool thing called "moderation." LOL. =o) You're going to be just fine. ~Sarah in VA

Hi Stacy. Welcome to the losing side! You keep up the struggle for water and protein. You need to make an attempt to not look too far into the future. Sometimes when we glimpse the future, we try to bring it into the present. Having said that, let me say this. I am 3 years plus, post op. I eat, during the average day, approximately 1 to 1 1/2 meals during the course of any day. I eat almost anything in small portions, and even enjoy desert in slim moderation, and I am talking real desert. I have granola bars, pasta, all meats and love veggies more than ever. If I could encourage you, enjoy being sick in the morning, use it as an opportunity to catch up on chores and have a warm cup of tea. Warm tea seems to really sooth many a pouch. But this sickness can be your support to keep you away from foods during this inital weight loss period. Go for a walk, walk off the nausea, push through this if you can. When I would get sick, nausea, I would lay down for about 1 hour and usually it would pass, then I would get up and do something, walk, clean, something. What you are going through is negative reinforcement, but I would rather have that than feel great and be testing the waters with foods I should not have and doing things food wise that would hurt my weight loss. Many a wls patient does not have this nausea, and they aren't able to fight the head issues and run to their food, eat most the day, drink what they want and wonder why they cannot lose. You have a gift in this nausea. Use it carefully, and if you don't eat at all during the day, you need to be concerned and talk to your surgeon. You must eat something, even if you don't feel like it, but if you are getting some food in each day, and it stays down, you are headed in the right direction. I can't say for sure, but I would guess that this nausea will pass with time. I wish you well, Patricia P.

I am four years out. I reached my goal weight before 1 year post-op and went 20 pounds under my goal weight. I had plastic surgery (breast aug. and abdomnioplasty) 1.5 years post-op. I am healthier in many respects, but problems that have developed are: peripheral neuropathy (paralysis in legs) that has resulted in slap foot and leg cramps. Also, it is easy to replace food addictions with other addictions. I was never a drinker, (I am 54) but over the past year with loss of my mother and a divorce, I found myself depending on the numbing out effects of alcohol. It's important to understand that the physical surgery will help you lose weight, but the reason we were obese to begin with had much more to do with what was going on inside our heads than what was going into our stomachs. Hope this helps. I no longer have high blood pressure, diabetes, hip pain or back pain. The nerves in my legs "crawl" and burn sometimes, but I am able to walk, run, and dance, so it's not debilitating. I would do it again in a heart-beat.

My insurance actually game me all information before, during, and still. I meet with my weight managment specialist on a once a month basis. We talk about weight I have or have not lost and what I need to do,eat, exercise and so on. I was in a class before surgery, that clearly explained what, how much and when I could move up on the next step. I did however go on line to wls.com--wls before during and after surgery menu's. Just to see what others had to say. I coppied several menu ideas and recipes. Also, went to this and other stores and bought books for before, during and after surgery and got loads of information. Call your pcp, or surgeon and ask them where to find a support group in your area. I am 1yr. & 4mon out and have lost 150lbs. All doctors have their own ideas, and if yours doesn't ck out online and find support groups, and this is a wondeful sight OH.COM ! Good Luck !! Oh if you don't already get the magazine at OH.COM Do! It is very good to refer to with ???'s Feel free to email me for support etc. I'll do what I can! M

Hi Stacey, I am out 2 months and 2 weeks yesterday!! 3 months on the 15th of May. I have been eating pretty much anything I can tolerate within my food ratios (for every 100 calories/no more than 3g fat/no more than 6g sugar); I eat sushi (my mainstay), pasta, chicken, tacos, beans, nuts, fruit, veggies, potatoes, you name it...I pretty much eat what I want. It's great! I found a 100 calorie granola bar - with oreos that fits into my ratio above - it's good and I tolerate....so I eat it. Not everyday, maybe once a week or twice. I have sugar free hard candy. I eat protein...lots and lots of protein. 3 bites of protein to every one bit of carb/veggie or fruit. I am addicted to pineapple, fresh spears from the produce department. Other things I eat: Cottage Cheese. Yogart. Popsicles. Strawberries. Applesauce. Iced Tea. Lean Cuisine TV dinner, singles. Eating Right (Vons Brand) TV dinners for the family - their turkey lagsana, ROCKS! Saltine crackers with peanut butter. OJ. Apple Juice. I eat pretty much what I want to - at home and at restaurants. It's great! I am fortunate that I can tolerate things well and my surgeon/Nut are very supportive in introducing foods, etc. I still eat only 3-5oz. of food per meal, but things are good. I do have days where I feel a bit queesy in the stomach, or something will smell too much for me and I won't eat it, etc. But it's all good. Your future will be bright, too. Keep the faith! It gets better with each passing day.
