Question:
Uh... Smelly Bowel Movements

Embarassing topic, but reality. Haven't seen anyone discuss this. I hope I am not unique but the smell of my feces and flatulence is not what I expected. In fact, I didn't expect a change in bowel movement smell. But I hate it and often feel embarassed. Does anyone else have this problem? Is there a remedy for it? There is some pill out there that I bought (starts with a "D"; cant remember what else), but in order for it to work, you have to take a pill everytime you put something in your mouth or the whole effect is lost... each and every time. I just couldn't keep up with that.    — poodie (posted on December 11, 2006)

Hi. I am two weeks out (RNY) and noticed the same problem. It's pretty gross. Like the smell of a garbage dump and it likes to linger. Other than air freshener to mask it, I'm not aware of any "remedy."

I am one week out and it hit me today after I walked around for about 40 mins. I hope there is some thing out there, I can't think of what I can do when I go back to work in 3 weeks. I took a beano pill hoping it does something. My stomach is all messed up today.

The pill you are talking about is called Devrom I think. There is one thing I hate and that's to be skanky. I'm a woman and I like to smell like one! I'm still pre-op (Jan 2nd) and a couple weeks ago I accidently found this other product they use in nursing homes and for folks that have to wear a "bag" to cut down on the smell. They said it also helps with bad breath, keeps underarm smell at bay for those that can't use deoderant, cut down on men and women's "private smells", cuts BO, sweaty smells and even guys use it to take away the natural smells we carry so they can hunt deer and not have their scent picked up. I thought... what the heck? I bought some. I can say for the first time in my life without acting better than anyone else... my poop doesn't stink. LOL Or gas or much of anything for that matter. Yay for me! Now I will keep taking them through my surgery and will probably take them forever. They may work better for some than others but I like them. The name is Nullo and the cheapest place I found them was www.americarx.com I received them in a few days and after taking 3 a day for a few days I cut back to one in the morning and one at night. I am now smelling like a bed of roses. lol. I just hope when that stinky-poo yucky stuff starts after surgery that it works just as well. If it's as bad as what I hear, it may be too powerful for help! If my stinky knocks Nullo for a loop I may try Devrom for a poop! I'm a poet and don't know it. Good luck!

Yes, Devron, that's it! I bought it but it said you have to take it everytime you eat and I eat throughout the day. It said that if you miss one dose, the smell comes back. I just got tired of trying because I never experienced relief from the smell. I'll try what you mentioned. Maybe I'll ask my doctor first just in case it causes issues for the altered anatomy. Do you know anyone who takes it that has had the surgery? Do you know of any other products besides Nullo that has a reputation too? I just want to see the options. I thought Devrom was the only choice out there.
