Question:
Protein Intake Needs, But How?

Accord to Dr.Franklins/Dr.Ganz calculations of finding the Protein Intake we should be getting my intake level is at 320 grams a day. How do I do this without exceeding too many calories? Calculation: Our body weight divided by 2.2 times 1.5 equals amount of protein needed daily.    — Michael Eak (posted on October 5, 2006)

This is the formula to calculate the amount of protein you should get in. It is according to your ideal weight, not your current weight. Here is the formula: (Ideal weight / 2.2) * 1.25 My ideal weight is 145 (145/2.2)*1.25 = 82.38 grams of protein per day 320 gram of protein seems way too high to me. Try this formula with your ideal body weight.

None of us need 320 grams of protein a day. The average, to maximize weight loss, is at least 60-80 grams per day. My anecdotal experience is that those people who could get in at leat 100 grams per day while still restricting carbs (to no more than 40 per day) were going to lose their excess weight quickly and healthily.

Please do not try to get in 320 grams of protein as your kidneys would not handle that much and you could risk damamge to them. 80-90 grams a day would be adequate for weight loss and providing your body the needs for functioning.

No one needs 300+ grams of protein per day ... Yikes! Most people need 60-80g per day ... Anything more than that is used as energy (or stored as fat).

Mike... Understand, it is finding balance with what makes you happy. Eating protein in an avergae of 100 to 125 grams per day is a rule of thumb.. We do not absorb all of it 20% - 30% of that of which we intake is not absorbed depending on your time table. I myself eat right about 150 a day but no less than 125. Please call me today and we can go over values and maybe I can help you... 386-676-2582 office I would love to have you as an addition to my conference focus group. I work many other post op via groups calls. It is so much more than just a plan it is learning personal devlopement of getting rid of our past lifestyle. I do wave my $25.00 weekly fee for POST op platoes or regainers...Or for those whom just need a plan that has worked for me.. I will say that I battle everyday with an obese mind, I now just know how to talk back! I deal with obesity, obesity does not control me anymore... They key is this... 1. I get my nutrition in daily and feel great with tons of energy 2. I work out 5 days a week. 3. I believe in my dreams... I am always serching for a way to get better... I am sure you could be accountable 2 two calls a month, weekly motivation and accountability to report in weekly... Weight check, 3 positive "wow" moments from the past week. and you get personal motivation... I teach a new skill... I have a true self worth to help others. I pick and choose who is really at "READY MODE" Again I do WAVE my consulation fees for Post op... It does require you to be accountable to a nutrition plan that has certanly work for me @ of course at a nice discount. I have learned one thing from many others... We do not value the cost of supplimentation and get so frustrated because we waste much money plus... there is no one there to answer us in the stores... Follow up is the key to success. You have heard this before from me.. Success is earned it is NEVER given! We fight for searching hard for what works and then most give up... That is how I lost control...I gave up too 3 years ago. I had my nutritionist pick me up! That is MY "WHY" of opening my heart and and waving my fees for people as determined as you. I talk to many people daily, If I feel like they are not ready, I will not push them, it is YOUR chioce... I will never fire anyone from my group, they will fire themselves... I run a 12 week boot camp here at my office and people love a challenege (this is not for post op~ it is for regular non wls people) In hopes that you are going to phone me today for us to meet in person in Novemeber. Call my offcie 386-676-2582, my client is here I have to train her now! I will be with her training until 12:30 Mike you are a superstar... You are a true inspiration... I enjoy my post op friends and I have grown to have many... I have balance...you just keep it going... Call after 12:30 Noonish... Lots of hugs, Celeste Nice pics on your profile, you are the bomb!!!

Michael, someone has mis-calculated. 320 is impossible. See the other responses they are more accurate.

Wow! And I thought *I* did a lot of protein (in supplement). The most I've done (during a bad carb seige) was 270g a day. That was nine 30g drinks. Some use the 1 lb per 1 lb of body wt, some use the kg per 1.5 or per 1.7 or per 2.... thing. You have to remember that fresh post-op, you are also losing muscle (and bone, and hopefully fatty tissue) at a fast pace. Especially as a man. Although my husband is now 11 yrs out, if we had it to do over, his post-op regimen would be 180g protein/day (6x30g), because he lost muscle so fast, he literally could not heft a 40# sack of dog food. And while some would say this is too much, his blood levels were low-normal. he still does 120-150g a day and hold lovely levels. I hold 180g/day and my levels are only "ok". Each person, each surgery type is a bit different. But don't be discouraged. It CAN be done with a supplement you can afford and you like. I weigh 110-115.
