Question:
Has anyone experienced severe pain in the neck, arm, shoulder after losing weight?
I have lost 188 lbs in 13 months and for the last few months I have been having untolerable pain in my neck and arm and shoulder. Was wondering if anyone else has had the same problem. — Louise P. (posted on May 10, 2006)

I'm no doctor, but I had the exact same symptoms as you, in addition to
what felt like a swolen neck. I went to see many doctors, but eventually
was diagnosed with GERD. I was put on Prilosec OTC and haven't had one
episode since. Hope this helps!

I was thinking it could be loose skin issues. I would talk to your PCP
about it.

Well, you know the spiel to get checked by a doc, so I'll just jump right
into relating my own experience and what I've heard. I also had aches and
pains crop up after wls. I have fibromyalgia but this was different. I
started going back to physical therapy after being out for over a year and
found that the weight loss does make your center of gravity shift. What
you were compensating for before with the weight is no longer there so your
body has to adjust. In addition to that, I discovered more lower back pain
and found out I have degenerative disc disease. I am thinking the pain was
always there while I was heavy but I had so much pain all over that I
didn't notice it as much. They said I likely had it because I had been so
heavy for so long. Things do ease up after awhile though, but there are
days like today for me where my back is killing me. Getting proper rest
(I don't) and exercise (I'm pretty lazy) does help. Of course, your pains
I can't specifically say whether they are related to what my experience was
or not, but it may help to hear what others have to say. I do know a lot
of people who have had aches and pains show up after the weight loss, as
well though. Dina

I agree with a couple of the other answers. I lost 175 and had problems
with weight distribution also. I also had gastritis and ulcers which were
causing a lot of the problem, so again you need to talk to your doctor.
Hope you get it figured out soon.
