I am one 3 weeks post op and have been doing good on my diet. The past 3 days I cannot hold down the mashed potatoes, cream of wheat, and all the good mushy food we love so much. I vomit when I eat them BUT... I can eat wheat thins and cheese nips and it stays down??? Anyone els have this problem?? I know they are not THE BEST for me but its all I can keep down? — Jessica Gonzalez (posted on January 21, 2006)

You should call your surgeon's office and ask them. They should be informed
on what is going on with you. There may be something wrong that needs
attention. If not, they can advise you anyway on what to expect. It does'nt
sound right to me.

I am 3 weeks out also and I had the same problem too and I found out that I
was eating to much of the mushy food and not chewing it properly. I think I
was so happy to have something in my mouth besides liquids that I was not
chewing properly and since it was really mushy I ate more than what they
told me to. I also was drinking right behind eating, which is a no no. I
hope this helps and if not call your Doc.

Jessica,
Your pouch is healing and there will definitely be good and bad days. Call
your surgeon and let him know because strictures do develop while the pouch
is healing. If you can't even keep crackers down, go straight to the ER.
I had one day at about 1 month out that I couldn't keep anything down and I
was dry heaving as well. They were worried it could be strictures but by
the next day I was completely fine and eating everything I had before.
Nothing like it since and I am 10 months this week. Good luck with your
journey and I hope there is nothing seriously wrong it's just your bad day
in all of the wonderful good ones.
Take Care,
Denise

I had the same problem but at around 3 months postop. Cheese and crackers
were my only food for over 4 weeks. Turned out to be a stricture. Simple
painless procedure took care of it and now I am eating just fine. Talk to
your surgeon ASAP.

you are entering 'stricture' alley (if you had an RNY) - call your doctor
(unless you have a cold/flu) its not normal. Better to get tested since
strictures do not heal on their own. If it is a stricture - its easily
fixed. good luck.

Possibly a stricture, or overeating. I went through a similar period and
determined I was just eating more than I should. It takes time to be able
to "listen" to this new stomach and I am learning everyday. I
just managed to hold down the first chicken .....I only had about an ounce,
ate VERY small bites and chewed a lot........and a half cup of salad with
ranch dressing. For me, it has been learning to stop as soon as I feel the
slightest bit full. For a lifelong overeater, you can imagine how much I
have to learn! Good luck!

I never introduced crakers into my diet for about 6 months they are very
hard to digest. I ate cottage cheese for the first 2 months and didn't
introduce anything else that and my protein drinks was it.

As you heal, your body is going to change regarding what food it likes.
One month my parnter likes eggs and the next, she can't stand them. So for
now, back off the mushy food and try yogurt and maybe a few solid foods.

You are so lucky; I am not allowed starchy foods like mashed potatoes! You
just have to see what you can keep down and what you can't. It is
different for everyone. i am over a year out, and I still can't eat
chicken!

Are you eating slow 5 minutes for every 1 oz eaten. According to the diet
I will be on at phase 2 you don't eat crackers just soft stuff. Are you
measuring and not drinking 15 minutes before meals and 30 minutes after
that could be the problem. Try the suger free puddings, custards, you can
use splenda or neutrasweet to make grits, cream of wheat. Or a little
margarine for mash potatoes I'd use Instant since they don't have lumps
like homemade does. Hope this helps some.
