Question:
Am I asking for trouble if I get a perm?
My hair is coming out a little. I am using Nioxin and it is really good. Can I get a perm? — MARSHA D. (posted on January 23, 2002)

I started losing my hair about 6 months after surgery and by the 7th month
I got a perm. Before I had thick hair but once i started losing my hair it
was getting really thin and no bounce or life to it. I got a perm and it
help fill in the thinning spots, and gave me more bounce, however I do need
to use a moisturizer daily. I have gotten my 2nd perm @ 11 months since my
surgery and now my hair looks healthy and has the bounce I needed. My hair
loss did stop at 9 months. I am 1 year out today and have lost 127 lbs
best of luck to you

I'm a licensed Cosmotologist so I can probably tell you that it's okay to
get a perm depending on the overall condition of your hair. But, remember
that the anasthesia does have an effect on the hair for up to a year after
surgery. This can cause the perm to straighten early. Also, pay a little
money and use a GOOD shampoo and conditioner. Not Suave or anything cheap
like that (it does make a difference on the performance of the perm). And,
if you have colored/bleached hair you really need to be careful and use
good products for the aftercare. (another tip: NEVER USE A BRUSH ON WET
HAIR TO GET TANGLES OUT!!! USE A PICK!! Brushing causes split ends!!! Just
a pet peeve of mine!)
