Question:
I just had RNY surgery on 9-12-11 & drinking very little.
Just had RNY surgery on 9-12-11 & feel much more painful than I thought I would & not much of an appetite. I stocked up on protein shakes that I did like before surgery, but now they are so sweet & cannot even bring myself to be able to sip them. Have drank very little water as well. Im gonna try the Injure Protein chicken soup (I think that is the name) I have seen many people give it good reviews. Please tell me this will all get better! :( — lovemybebes (posted on September 15, 2011)

This surgery is very difficult, especially at first, butyou must sip sip
sip! If you do not like the shake why not dilute it with milk, I use
lactaid free milk.
Hang in there my sister, you will be so happy.

I had my surgery on 7/5/11 and I had some of the same issues. I didn't
stock pile protein shakes because my nutritionist warned me that my tastes
would change as well as I wouldn't be able to handle as much sugar
afterward. For me I can't handle anything that has more than 15g of sugar
per serving. Immediately after surgery I was drinking Carnation Instant
Breakfast and EAS Myoplex for protein. With water you literally have to
sip. Its hard at first but gets easier to drink over time. In terms of not
having much of an appetite, you're still in the honeymoon phase where you
don't feel hunger. I still get that sometimes but you have to set yourself
on a schedule where you eat every 2-3 hours. It keeps your metabolism going
and you'll lose a lot more weight. I hope this helps - Good luck :)

Like the others said sip sip sip... it's difficult at first but will get
better with time :) I had my surgery Dec 09 and still remember how
difficult the beginning was but believe me it was well worth it. I too
used lactose free milk... also if you are using vanilla protein powder try
adding sugar-free (or no sugar added) carnation instant breakfast (choc was
my choice) it adds more protein and helps with the taste! Hang in there
and remember to drink you don't want to become dehydrated :)

I had RNY in September of 2010. I remember not wanting to drink anything
after surgery. I still have to make myself eat. You MUST get your
protein. You eat to survive now instead for enjoyment or comfort or to
satisfy hunger. So don't give up!! You are still healing and need that
protein!! It will be worth it. I'm below goal and very pleased with
results! I'm actually going to be in a fashion show on Saturday !! Hang
in there it will get better!
