Question:
Does anyone have any interesting high protein meal ideas

Im about 7 weeks out and I am having a hard time trying to make interesting but appropriate meals. I mostly eat eggs for breakfast, tuna for lunch and a piece of fish or a stuffed portabella mushroom for dinner. As you can imagine it has become very boring. I need help.    — Athinnermom (posted on March 4, 2010)

Looove your name on the post. It will happen, no worries. At your point, I ate a lot of frittatas (it's basically a baked quiche w/o the crust) - if you want me to send you a recipe, just let me know - I put any kind of meat in and all sorts of veggies. I ate a TON of fish, and when I went out I usually had a few shrimp. I also did well with chili (white and regular). I had a hard time with Tuna salad AND scrambled eggs (both made me really sice and I still hardly ever eat them). I ate a lot of stir fry ( no rice), sashimi, and roasted chicken when I needed something quick - our local grocery store (and most do this) have them that you can just pick up and take home for around $7 for a whole chicken. I also like Cottage cheese w/ berries and a little cayenne pepper sprinkled on top, ricotta sweetened w/ a splenda, chicken salad, and dont' forget abotu beans - I make a 3-4 bean salad weekly - just sautee some onion, open up 3 cans of whatever beans ( I use garbonzo, red kidney, black, and yellow wax ), rinse, toss w the cooked onion and then pour some low-sugar Zesty or Robusto Italian dressing over it. A 4 oz portion of that and a few slice of some kind of meat is a typical meal for me. I pretty much still eat like that but now I have some bread w/ breakfast because if I don't my blood sugar will dip. I'm sure I'll think of more and I'll repost.

I'm still pre-op, but here are a few of my suggestions. Fajetas (sp) without the tortilla....marinate chicken tenders in 50:50 Soy Sauce and Worsteshire Sauce; add Cilanto if you like. We love a Cabbage dish: Smoked sausage pk, 1 onion, 1 head of cabbage, a few potatoes. It's a one skillet dish. Salmon croquets, chow mein without the noodles or rice...pork, water chest nuts, celery, onions, bamboo shoots, snow peas, thicken with Soy sauce and corn starch or flour mixture. Hope some of these help. Jane W.

I was very reliant on fajitas when I began solids. I've also experimented with different dressings and marinades for chicken breast. One of my favorite salads consists of baked chicken (seasoned w/Mrs. Dash's Montreal chicken seasoning, garlic powder, poultry seasoning and bay leaves), 1c romaine lettuce (or baby spinach), a bit of red onion and shredded carrots. I use about a tsp of Kraft's honey dijon dressing. www.allrecipes.com has a section for healthy eating to include low carb/high protein suggestions. I've found it very helpful.

Quinoa is a very high protein grain that cooks fast. I use it with stir fried veggies and just a tad of sesame oil sprinkled over it after cooking. They also make quinoa pasta, which is made from corn flour and quinoa. Otherwise I don't eat pasta or rice, so this is a nice addition for me.

I have had such a time with protein and just plain eating, that I just had two protein shakes a day. Now I am able to eat egg or tuna salad. Also, Greek yogurt is delish and full of protein, mix it with splenda and flavor. I can have fruit now, b/c i am at goal, but I do not think you can being you are seven weeks out.

Im 3 mths out. I fix alot of chili(either turkey or ground sirloin) I also eat lots of homemade beef veg soup. I just found something I love. I take raw oatmeal about 2 tbl.add 1 tbl of peanut butter,1 tbl of sugar free hershey choc. milk mix,2tbl of powdered nonfat dry milk and add raisins and sometimes some sort of nut(like walnuts). I mix it all together with just enough water (you might want to mix with you clean hands)to make it come together and I keep it in the fridge and have a bite or two whenever I want that something but you cant eat that something. Its wonderful and you can make it your way and in any amt.

Have you considered "plain" protein powder? This is available at www.bariatriceating.com (it's called PURE Unflavored Protein Isolate). Also www.hungrygirl.com is a great website for all over healthy eating tips. You can check it daily or even sign up for daily email tips. I too am now about 9 weeks out and experiencing some of the same difficulty as you, but these sites have been a tremendous resource for me as well. Good luck and hope this helps.

You can't go wrong with seafood...high grams fo protein and low cal...I also ate turkey sandwh=ich meat when i was allowed. I bought an oscar myer one that had like 50 cals per slice. I used to make a wrap with lettuce, cheese, and turkey and cut a section from the middle and eat it. It felt nice to eat "normally" But find what you like. Dont try to eat too many different things at this point. Let your body adjust and take it slow. Best of luck to you! Hugs N God Bless, Kim
