Question:
Vomiting almost contantly after after eating had RNY
am thinking of RNY I have a friend that had RNY in June she vomits almost everytime she eats. Her hair is falling out. Is any of this normal. — Carol Sue H. (posted on December 28, 2009)

No, this is not normal. She needs to contact her surgeon ASAP. She should
have an upper GI scope to make sure she doesn't have a stricture. She is
losing her hair because her protein intake is not adequate. Good luck to
her! I had 9 strictures my first year!

A doctor will usually troubleshoot first, (mine did) is she chewing her
food real good? is she taking bites that are too big to fit in the new
opening to the pouch,(which is only the size of your little pinkie finger)
is she eating too fast? I wasn't chewing my food good enough/small enough.
And it caused me to throw up everytime. Her hair falling out is normal due
to surgery, protein intake. That will pass with time. More info under
previously asked questions post op. If she has tried to chew better, take
smaller bites, eat slower then she should contact her doctor. Well,
contact the doctor and he will go through these with her, but at least he
knows about them. Does she throw up with just food or water too? If it is
just with food, then probably nothing to worry about. If it is with water
and/or food, then it could be a stricture. I am 4 yrs post op without one
stricture, so I have had my share of concerns, and a lot of foamies due to
that. Hope it is nothing serious. for her hair, bump up protein, use
Nioxin Scalp Treatment for fine hair, it will give the appearance of full,
thick hair and it really helps.

I would not make the decision for this surgery based on anyone elses
experience, as we are all different. Usually symptoms like these mean
something is wrong. You may have a completely different experience, with
no problems. Most problems have a reason that is easily corrected, by
staying close, and in touch with your Doctor and bariatric center. Learn
the program, stick to it, and your results will be good. You have to
relearn how to eat the right foods, hydration is a must, and chewing food
completely is important. All these things become second nature after a
while. Good luck. And remember, if you are obese, the side effects of
that, far exceed those of having weight loss surgery. I'd do it again in a
heart beat!! Top wt 240, surg wt, 224, current weight at 2 yrs post op
110. I'm 5'2". I credit my success to following the program!

No this is not at all normal. Maybe she's not eating the correct foods or
perhaps there is something internal going on. She need to contact her
surgeon.

I had my surgery in June 2009 I did great while eating puree but as soon as
I introduced solid food I was throwing up all the time. Please encourage
your friend to see her doctor and nut. I healed too tightly which happens.
The doctor did an endoscopy and I feel great no problems eating now. And
I've lost a total of 87 lbs. so far. I'm keeping my hair because I'm eating
and keeping the right amount of protein. I tried the Nixxon hair treatment
but my skin was too sensative. I use manoxidel available at CVS or most
drugstore cheaper and works great. Good luck, its worth the journey, I have
good health now and so much to look forward to.
