Question:
3 weeks out and confused about diet?

I am 3 weeks out for the roux-n-y. And I am not really hungry at all. I eat the sugar-free popcicles and soups, but I still try to test the pouch. And sadly, the pouch always wins. What can you recommend that still gives me what I need and healthy? Thanks!    — k_oneal55 (posted on November 28, 2009)

Don't worry about nearly 3 weeks out & not really hungry - sometimes it IS a struggle to fit in all the liquids & foods at the early stages, even the meds & supplements, they are a meal in themselves! Sugar-free popcicles and soups are fine - & don't keep 'testing' your pouch (there'll be time enough for that later!!) Just go with the flow - little & often, high protein first. Sorry I can't be more practical help!

be thankful you have no hunger. Take this time to re learn foods and healthy choices and nutritional values of food. Journal everything you eat. Make note of calories, ounces of liquids and grams intake. Don't try to eat bad things as it will send you down a road to failure. It will all come in time. Everyone wants success who goes thru this and I am only telling you what I have done to be successful . I met goal in 10 months and have maintained well for 7 months. Not enough time out (17 months) to call myself successful, but long enough to know how to deal with food now. I eat for nutrition and not pleasure. And i feel great. I am not a slave to my hunger any longer. Best of luck to you and God Bless. Hugs,Kim

I am six weeks out of RNY. At three weeks I was struggling like you. I was drinking Unjury protien drinks and popcicles like you. If your doc/nut gave you a list of food acceptable at different stages go with that. My doc says to eat protien first then if there is still room ok. I still find that I can only eat soft/mushy foods. Sometimes I can eat a whole large hard boiled egg, and that takes me 15-20 minutes. I don't know what you mean by "testing" your pouch. If you do to much to soon, you can rupture your pouch...so take it easy. The lack of hunger you are expierancing is normal. It only lasts about a year. It is a great part of our new pouches that helps with weightloss and relearning how to eat. I am open to chatting if you like. Rachael

The key to the success of this surgery is to be patient. You need to stay on liquids for at least one more week, or two if you can. The longer the better. then move over to thick liquids, like split pea soup, stew in a blender is a good one for me, real thin., The pouch needs time to heal. It is still very swollen, tender and sore. You should baby it. You wouldn't feed a baby a steak, knowing their stomach's aren't ready for it. (same thing) If you move over to solids you could cause damage to your pouch. Just broth (it gets boring, but well worth it) Drink your protein, crystal lite, and sugar free liquids you can see through. You won't be hungry for a few months, so it will be rough when you aren't hungry. Set a minute timer for every 5 minutes to sip, sip, sip and stay hydrated.
