Question:
I am 10 weeks post op and need suggestions on how to get back on track.

I have fell into the bad habit of snacking on potato chips and chips and salsa. I feel like such a failure. Please give any advise or suggestions as to how I can get back on track and what kinds of foods I need to concentrate on at this stage. Thanks so much for any help!    — angela09 (posted on October 10, 2009)

You are not a failure just because you slip up now and then. Give yourself a break! I would start concentrating on the basics of protein first. That should help satisfy your hunger some and if you possibly can, get the chips and salsa out of the house. If you can't and you start to reach for them, try to take a walk or do something else to get your mind off of them.

get back to your protien. ASAP..I was told to try putting Turkey Pepperoni (about 4) on a napkin in the microwave for 20 seconds...use as chips. You can also use Ricotta cheese with Pizza sauce. There are many things better for you than chips. Iam 15 months out from RNY. Just start over...you are never lost..just restart! Best of luck...try a support group also.

Get it out of the house!!! That is what I have to do. I have more willpower at the store than I ever would at home. Then, pick yourself back up and brush yourself off. It was one little set back- we all have them! For instance, last night I had my first cup of decaf coffee is over a year. Of course the coffee wasn't bad...it was all the creamer that I put in it...seriously, a lot. Felt good when I was drinking it but later I thought of all the unnecessary calories I just ate. So I slapped myself on the hand and got back on track today. We can't change what we did yesterday but we can today. It'll be alright- just make the change! :-)

I am 8 weeks post op, and to be quite frankly I am having a hard time eating anything. I eat protein, if anything I will have a shake or pureed beans. Meat can be an issue, I do well with chipped ham, but I have a problem with fish.

I am not as far along as the rest of you (surgery date "tentatively" 10/29). But I have started low carb eating to lose the 8 lbs my Dr wants me to lose between now and then, and to prepare me for my future with less carbs in my diet. Pork Rinds (bbq flavor for me) are a no carb, high protein option for satisfying that "crunch craving". With only 80 calories per serving and 8 grams of protein and no carbs, it is a wonderful alternative. I hope this helps.

Remember to be gentle with yourself. It does not matter what you ate before, just what you choose to do now. Look at your life and see if maybe you need to include some more fun things for yourself. Check out a book or magazine from the library and take a "vacation". Take a nice hot bath and light a candle. Anything that you would find fun. I usually find I am having difficulty with eating behaviors when I put myself last and take care of everyone else. You can do it and you are worth it.

schedule an appt with your nutritionist first. Then think about what you went thru to get this surgery and the surgery itself. We all want to be successful and eating that kind of food is counter productive. Remember to eat your protein first. Not doing so will wreak all kinds of havoc on our bodies. You need to eat for nutrition now. I am not preaching or scolding. I am concerned. Try to drink when you feel munchie or try chewing on ice that has sat out for 10-15 minutes..so it isnt' so hard..I really hope you will stop the cravings for bad things. Eat the salsa..a bite or two, but couple it with cheese, or meat. Our pouch is tender at 10 weeks. Nurture it and follow the seven rules and you will be ok. Protein first, chew every bite 20 times, meals will be 20-30 minutes long, no longer. Wait 5 minutes between bites-a must!, no drinking 30 minutes before, during meals or 45 minutes after, remember your vitamins and calcium, journal your foods...this will let you see when you are having hard times with foods and maybe help you to change things in your life around. Best of luck to you and God Bless! hugs, kim

Angela, I believe in the tough love approach and you may not like what I'm about to say, but here goes: GET THAT CRAP OUT OF THE HOUSE....NOW!!!!!!! You are only 10 weeks out and already off track???? Do you realize what you just put your body thru and you are eating that junk??? This surgery is for life.Remember that. Look at the big picture. RESPECT your body, LOVE your body. LISTEN to your body. Ok I'm done. I'm a hard ass when it comes to this, but we have all been given a special life saving gift and we have to be gratefull. BEST OF LUCK TO YOU!
