Both before (during my two weeks liquid diet) and to this day - there are certain things that make me gag, make me nausea and just plan gross me out. Like once a week something will target this to happen. I think it's something we are going to have to look at dealing with.

I had lapband surgery 10 months ago. The smell of food being deep fried really nauseates me. After having surgery my lactose intolerance increased to severe from moderate. I have to watch what I eat with dairy in it now.

I am now lactose intolerant and I have a weak stomach for gross things that I see on TV where before they did not bother me.

Yes! Chicken smells like garbage. Sweets make my stomach hurt terribly. And certain spices taste horribly. Food has changed for me which limits what I can eat. It is a bad thing on one hand but on the other it limits what I can eat and aids my weight loss.

Greetings. I am 4 years post RNY and to this day, my throat will not allow me to swallow regular water and I was a great water-drinker before my surgery. I have to flavor my water with Zip Fizz (a benefit is the massive amount of B12 in it) and Crystal Lite. I am now striving to get my water back to water except for the Zip Fizz. Smells? Anything deep fried simply turns my stomach. Milk? Can't handle it. Besides, it clogged my system and actually caused me to gain weight and to feel lousy. But, tastes change over time and what you like right now you might not like next week an what you don't like or can't handle right now, you will like and will be able to handle at another time. I think this is a life-time change of tastes, eh? Blessings, Christine Gibson, MS, MA, Life Coach in training, and WLS Support Group Leader.

Cigarette smokes makes me very sick, almost to the point where I want to vomit. Don't care for the taste of milk like I used to.

Yes! For the 1st--about 5-6 weeks post-op, I could not tolerate the smell of the protein shakes. I understand that is quite common. Certain other foods either tasted or smelled really bad. I was brushing my teeth several times a day because the smell/taste of my own breath was icky! Now at 10+ weeks post-op, I can tolerate the protein shakes again, and I'm not nauseated by as many other food smells as before. However, I did notice yesterday that I still don't like cooking odors in the house! I was okay to eat the food, but I didn't like the smell of it in the house! I have to do the dishes right away after cooking or those smells just gag me. Weird, huh?

I became lactose intolerant within a few days of surgery...I cannot drink whey protein, or straight milk...I can handle cheese since I only eat one ounce at a time. Cottage cheese and yogurt have enzymes that seem to offset the lactose in them and I can tolerate those...but not ricotta cheese unless it's only an ounce...I dump with over 30 g's of sugar still. (used to be much less) And I dump with even low sugar alcohols....Some fake sugars kill me...and some I can handle a wee bit...Anything deep fried sticks to my throat and gags me. Potato chips YUCK...all I taste is fat...and French fries get stuck EVERYTIME...as does pasta...Rice is a little easier, but I only eat 1/4 cup once in a blue moon as a side...I cannot drink straight fruit juices...and only 2 oz , which I must dilute and sweeten with stevia (natural sweetener)...I cannot eat pancakes, more than one over-easy egg...or I dump...Beef hits my pouch like a rock unless I chew it til it tastes like metal...and so I rarely eat beef and when I do, my jaws are so tired of chewing that I can only finish maybe 2 oz! I can only eat dry breads...the ends or toast or whole grain crackers...Moist breads I can only eat one slice as in a half a sandwich on most occassions...sometimes I can tolerate more...but not often....I am 5 years out and those things are the ones that stuck with me...After surgery I could no longer swallow pills...I ate pureed food so long that anything chunky that hits the back of my throat will not go down....Including food. I have to chew all my food til it is mush or it's just not going down...Pills included...I have to buy capsules with powder so I can open the cap and swallow the powder...I can only use uncoated tylenol tablets and I chew them...It's gotten easier to swallow some gel caps...Like omega 3's the alternative of tasting fish oil is far more horrible! So I learned quickly to swallow those and B vits too...THEY ARE GROSS! The smell of whey will make me want to throw up too...There were more things that eased up and do not bother me at all...Water was one thing I could not drink plain or cold...But after some time I am able to drink water and prefer it over most all other liquid it helps with a sqirt of lime or lemon too!...I always order Iced Tea in a to go cup(And I won't put the straw in til later when eating out so I can wait 30 minutes to drink it...Or I don't order a drink at all! I cannot trust myself to have a drink in front of me with dinner...I will drink it...That's another reason for not putting the straw in and it has a lid too...I can't accidentally sip!
