Question:
Sex after the lap band
With the lap band surgery there is a port under the skin that is used to put saline solution in the band. Will have sex cause that to move. I know this is a crazy question but I would like to know. Thanks! — claravonder (posted on November 24, 2008)

You haven't done enough research!
Although I had a Roux en-Y bypass, I was a facilitator of support group
covering all surgeries for both pre-op and post-op. There are a couple of
questions answers to your question. Why do you want this surgery?
Do realize tha all surgeries bear certain inherent risks, including death?
Having said this, this is not a neat way to take off a few pounds, it is
supposed to be a life saving and life altering
surgery. If you have come this far to address surgery, you need to look at
the underlying problems which have allowed you to gain life threatening
amounts of weight, you will need couselling. You will also have to change
your eating habits, what and when you eat, and drink. You'll need to talk
to at least a weight loss Psychologist and a Nutritionist, prior to
surgery. When and if you decide that lap band is the right surgery for you,
you should study the success rates of this surgery versus other available
surgeries and their success rates, before deciding.
Virtually all lap banding surgeries are conducted laproscopically. A series
of small incisions, using cameras and long handled surgical instuments to
set the band in place, creating a pouch, connecting tubing to the port,
which is sewn into place behind the muscle tissue of the adominal wall,
which is behind the fat layer, and the outer skin. So in answer to your
original question regular two person sex should have no effect whatsoever
on the port, assumming that your surgical wounds are healed and your Doctor
says it is okay. Legal fine print: if the sex includes any of the following
the above okay is withdrawn - Trapezes; nets; tightropes; infact all ropes;
anything found at a Circus. Do you get the idea? Again information is your
best friend read everything so you can make the best decision for
yourself!

Yes, once the doctor clears you, it should be fine to have sex. The port
is not just under the skin, it is underneath your layer of abdominal fat
sutured to your abdominal muscle. The more weight you have to lose, the
more fat will be on top of the port and you shouldn't feel it at all. When
you reach goal, you may feel it or even see it when you do an abdominal
crunch. That's why when I get a fill, my surgeon has me hold my legs out
straight, put my hands behind my head and do a crunch to get the port
closer to the skin so it is easier for him to access. I still have a ways
to go.
Hope that helps,

All I want to say is to Steve P's comment...totally uncalled for! The
"legal fine print" comment was truly sick!! People here want
support and morally acceptable comments..They have been and are going
through a whole lot of changes...if you cannot be "nice" you
shouldn't post!!

I, too, was worried about this same thing. I have 7 weeks post this week
with the Realize Band. My husband and are very sexually active and was
worried he would be able to "feel" the port. It was not true at
all. If anything, the 25 pounds that I have already lost have made a
"GREAT" difference in both our lives.
I am not sure what Steve P is talking about and his kind of support is not
needed on this website at all. I don't know where he thinks he is coming
from because what he wrote basically has nothing to do with your question.
He should be reprimanded for his type of support. We all need to be as
positively supportive to each other as much as possible or at least stay on
task when answering someone else's question.
May God be with you and all of us during our new life-long journey.

My goodness! That Steve guy just blew my mind! I thought there was some
sort of filter or person in charge of these boards that has some control
over what/who can post. That guy should never be allowed here. We come
here for help and inspiration, not for kind of garbage.
