Question:
Anyone have to have their gallbladder removed after surgery?
I had Gastric Bypass 5/22/08 and was recently told that I have gallstones. I went to my surgeon yesterday and was told that I need a emergency surgery where he will remove my gallbladder. — DPURNELL (posted on October 1, 2008)

My surgeon removes the gallbladder when he does the RNY because it had
become apparent that most of his patients returned with issues. Im sorry
this has happened to you.

Many people have their gallbladder removed! I have heard some surgeons just
take it out when they do the surgery because of the frequent problems
people have with gallbladders...I heard a few times from doctors familiar
with WLS say things like "You can only hope your surgeon takes your
gallbladder w/WLS surgery before troubles start"...I still have mine
and always fear mine will need removing one day! I wish you much luck and a
speedy recovery!

My surgeon took mine out at the time of surgey being involved in WLS issues
this is very common to have to take it out after WLS. Mine said he would
take a look at it while he was doing the WLS and would take it out if it
looked like it needed to go.

I am 5 years post op and just had my gallbladder removed 2 days ago.
Problems can develope at anytime and they are not just weightloss related.
People who have never had weight issues have problems with their
gallbladders. I am just thankful my problem was diagnosed early and taken
care of quickly.

I had my gallbladder removed 4 month and 5 days after my RNY. I did not
need to have emergency surgery. After he found out the results of the
ultrasound (Friday), he removed it on Tuesday. Yours must be realllly bad
for it to be an emergency. Recovery was fast, I had mine removed lap. Good
luck. Paula

recovery time? How long were you out of work if you had to removed after
WLS?

I had my gallbladder out 13 years ago and I have to say that surgery was
MUCH EASIER than my Gastric Bypass. Sorry to hear you have to go back into
the hospital but I'm sure you'll do great. Please post and let us know how
you make out.

I had my gall bladder out 4 months after RNY. Recovery time was about 3
days--piece of cake.

I had my gallbladder removed about 3 years ago. I was an emergency surgery,
went in at 9:00 with stomache pains and was being operated on at 2:00. Any
way I was in the hospital over night and up and getting around in about a
week.
