Question:
Not losing weight that fast?

Had RNY in June, have only lost 7 lbs. since the first part of September for a total of 56 lbs. why is it that I am not losing a lb. to 2 lbs. a day? I know everyone is different and lose at different rates. however like last month I lost about the same. I have 47 lbs. to get to my goal weight, is this going to be very difficult to lose the remainder to get down to 130???    — * S. (posted on September 22, 2008)

First..Congrat on the great weight loss. My RNY was 8 weeks ago and I lost 38lbs. My dr says it should have been 40. He says 20 lbs a month for the first 3, so at 3 months I should have lost 60. Sounds like you are right on track!

These stalls are normal they are called platueas. Whats happening is your body is trying to catch up. when it does you will start to lose again. I am 3 1/2 months post op RNY(also in June) and I had the same problem. I have lost a total of 50 pounds so far. It also depends on how much weight you have to lose. The less you have to lose the slower it will be. I have a goal of 120 I have 40 pounds left to go. I am at an average of losing 3-5 pounds a week now. You will get there I know I would like it to come off the way it did in the beggining too but its also important to be healthy not just skinny! Good Luck!

My doc says 2 - 3 lbs per week on average. Sounds like you've done better than that! With a total weight loss of only 56+47 sounds like you're a lightweight and should expect those pounds to come off slower. See the WLS lightweights board.

Please don't take this as bitter or sarcastic, but, you are upset at not losing a pound or two a day??? Most people struggle to lose 1-2# per week. We are in this for the long haul and I think perhaps you have unrealistic expectations. Sounds to me that you are ahead of schedule and doing amazingly well. Hang in there, stay off the scales and it will happen. Keep eating, drinking and exercising the way you know how to and it will happen. Be thankfull for how well you are doing. Congrats on your success, Dawn Vickers, RN, BLC, CLC

Hi, I had RNY in February of this year. I lost faster at first, and now lose anywhere from 1 to 2 pounds per week ( I have been doing pretty well with eating, but not with exercising). I have lost 87 pounds so far. Other people I have spoken with said they were losing 1-2 pounds per week as well, but if they exercise, they lose 2-5 pounds per week. Sounds like you're doing just fine! The weight will come off little by little over the course of the next year or so,,,

This happened to me, too. I'm now 2 years out and these days I struggle to stay ABOVE 100 lbs. It will come off, just give it time. It took me about 1 year to get down to my ideal weight and now I'm underweight. The great thing about losing weight slow is that I don't have any loose skin and didn't have to go the plastic surgery route. My doctor said that because I lost slowly, the skin was able to adjust back to its normal size. He said that the worst skin flaps that he sees are in people who lose their weight too fast. Maybe this is a blessing instead of a curse. I hope everything works out for you :)-

For me weight loss fell off dramatically after the first 3 months. It greatly slowed down since then. But I have kept a record of weight loss and inches lost. I take a picture every month. The pictures are the only way I can realize the results I've had. Sometimes when I've hit a plateau esp from month 6-8 and the weight slowed down, inches were still lost, and clothing size went down. I am almost 10 months out now. I remind myself all the time, that we can gradually lose over an 18 month period, before stabalizing. If you stick to the program. Eating protein first, and drinking all the fluids you need, vitamins, calcium etc. Stay around 800-1000 calories a day, your body will have to give it up eventually. Patience. Look at what you have lost. That's a lot of weight!! Try picking up a fifty lb. bag of dog food and walk around with it a few minutes! You've come a long way, and you have more to go, but it won't, and can't, be like those first few months. Just be mindful, not to incorporate the wrong foods into what you eat daily, and in turn, jeopardize your results. Good luck, on your path to a healthy new self!!

Hi ! I too am post rny in June. I haev lost just 50 lbs. I am losing it slow...and have about 50 more to go. I started at 228. Losing it slow isn't a terrible thing. You have more time to get in shape and maybe not have hanging skin!!! I work out 1 hour a day and then walk another. My nut and dr seem to think I am losing ok. Not on the fast side, but not slow enough to concern them. I eat my 3 meals and 2 oz per meal. If you eat less and your calorie count is not there, you may be sabatoging (sp) yourself. Your body will go into starvation mode. give yourself time. In 3 months you have lost 50 lbs! I am sure it took longer to put it on. Congrats on a job well done! And remember after we get to our goal weights, we are dieting like before, so take this time to relearn to eat. Healthier and for fuel...etc. Slow can be good! Enjoy it!! hugs, Kim

Wow, 56 lbs since June and you are complaining...How long did it take you to gain the weight.. You are doing great, please don't rush the loss. 2 pounds a week is great. You only needed to lose 103 pounds, you will not lose it as fast as someone who has to lose 300 pounds. NEVER compare yourself to other people, we are all different. Continue with your fluids, protein, exercise etc... and you will reach your goal. You skinny little thing you, 177 pounds, OMG that's 2 pounds above my first goal! I'd kill to be there!

I think that you are right on target with your weight loss. My wls was 7-22-08 and down only 25lbs, but everyone says that is good for me. You can become discouraged as I did when you read about others losing weight soooooo fast. Everyone is different, and 56lbs since June is great--keep up the good work. I'm waiting for the day when 56lbs is a part of my journey. You are doing great.
