Question:
Any advice for low grade nausea? PLEASE HELP!

Hi. I had gastric bypass on March 19th. Everything seems to be going well except the last 2-3 weeks, I have had low grade nausea 24 hours a day. Sometimes it's worse than others. I called the doctor and they said that lots of patients get it, but it does go away and to be patient. I have tried mint and ginger teas, the medication reglan and trying to eliminate foods that might be causing it. Nothing is working. Are there other people out there that had this problem? What worked for you? How long did it last? If I have to deal with this forever, I don't think I can handle it. I appreciate any advice you can give.    — Heather36 (posted on April 30, 2008)

The short answer is - it should pass with time. The long answer is - I was the same way in the beginning and on and off again ever since. I am 1 year and 4 months out and there are days, sometimes a week, sometimes more - that nothing settles well. What worked for me. hot - hot tea, peppermint. Time. Good luck.

I got it for about two weeks. I took two things for it. One was to coat my pouch so I could keep food down as the insisions are like an ulcer, so I took Carafate 1GM/10ML Suspension 1/2 hour before eating and for the Nausea I took Promethazine 25 Mg Tablets 4 times a day. Best of Success to you.

Hi Heather, My tummy as well is not the same and I am 12 weeks post-op. somtimes Peppermint Tea or Organick Real Peppermint Extract (2)Drops (from healthfood store) in water are soothing. I also picked up some liquid acidophilus from the same health food store works best for me with nausea. The milky liquid must be refrigerated, but is a great tummy tamer. Good luck, you are not alone. I was also told it would get better and it is slowly. BJ Becker

Hi, I also took Carafate and Nexium for the nausea that helped tremendously. I had surgery on January 8, 2008 and mine started about 6 weeks later. It flares up still every once and awhile, but I take Carafate and it goes away. I am 3 months out and have had very little problems with surgery or stomach!! The doc said warm tea seems to help with nausea as well. Lots of luck and hope this helped some! LaDonna

I am preop but I do know about nausea. I was on Byetta for a year and it was a constant problem. People on my Byetta groups suggested Sea Bands. You can get them at Walmart or Walgreens or maybe any drug store. You put them around your wrists with the pressure points in a certain location. I didn't put much faith in them but they actually helped. They are used for sea sickness. Just a suggestion. Karen

I had this also....In my situation is was a cross between nausea and "hunger pangs" and I was told is normal, its normal, well after 4 months they took a look see inside and It was an ulcer just past my new pouch on my intestines. I was really upset that i just kept being told its normal, now im still taking meds for this ulcer and it keeps me from many foods I am allowed to eat but cant cause it causes me problems. So i would suggest if it persists and the symptoms are like I described get it looked into......I wish you the best!

You may want to buy some ketone strips and check to see if you are in ketosis. Whenever I am ketotic, I get that icky nausea. My nut allows me to eat a cracker or two when I just can't seem to get out of it with just fruit and yogurt. . . and of course you have to keep hydrated. (Which is hard to do when you are nauseated all the time!) SO, I suggest you try to see if it might be a simple / easy resolved thing like ketosis.

Are you getting in all of your fluids? I had issues with Nausea after surgery, and my dr said to really work on getting in all of my water. When I did it went away. They told me nausea is one of the symptoms of dehydration. Amy

I had severe nausea the first year post op, I am now almost 3 years post op and get about a weeks worth of the minor nausea the week I am supose to start my period so I believe that is hormone related nausea. It does get better, but I suffered horribly the first year. I tried every home remedy and prescription to no avail. The phenergan worked, but it kept me sedated. I believe the first year nauesa was from the ketosis and explains why it, for the most part, quit once I quit losing weight. Just hang in there! Oh...what I did find that helps me now, is to half or 1/4 the phenergan, it seems to be enough to take away most of the nausea without making me sleepy....maybe try that?

Are you able to eat? Does the nausea get better or worse after eating? Reglan stimulates the digestive track which helps move food along... if nausea is being caused by food sitting the stomach/pouch, Reglan can be really helpful. You might want to ask about being prescribed an anti-emetic (anti-nausea) medication like Phenergan, Compazine, or Zofran. Good luck.

Hi my name is Robin I had GBS on May 22. 2007 and about a two weeks after surgery I started with the nausea. The doctor found I had an ulcer so I took carafate which did not help but I then took zegerid which helped with that ulcer problem, but I still had the nausea and vomitting and not able to eat the doc kept telling me it would pass. I visited the er many times getting IV fluids and they would do blood work ups on me. Well after numerous tests and getting very ill and having my potassium at critical levels they found I had a stricture. I had surgery for that in July 20, 2007. Wel a couple weeks after that nausea increased tests where done for my gall bladder the doc said everything was ok and people sometimes will have it for ever. He told me he could reverse my bypass and I told him no so I went and got a second opion. So on March 19,2008 I went in and had my gall bladder out. The test came back showing my gall bladder was diseased but my first surgeon wouldn't take it out because all tests came back normal. I am feeling alot better now I get nauseated once and a while but it could be from something I ate.

I think all of the answers posted here are very infomative, and also want to add the possibility of protein supplements causing nausea. I have significant nausea when I try to drink protein shakes. I have tried about 5 different types/brands and they all make me feel ill. The only way I can tolerate them is if I drinl them very slowly in little sips - make an 8 ounce cup last 4 -5 hours.
