Question:
Please elaborate on the "liquid only" liver shrink diet...

Can someone please elaborate on the "all liquid" diet for me? My Dr. put me on the 14 day liver shrink diet and I did well the first five days, but regretfully had a weak moment! I already lost quite a bit of weight at that point, but I feel I need to make up for my weak moment. My Dr. has me on SF Carnation Instant Breakfast for breakfast and lunch, fruit in between and a salad with 3 oz of lean meat for dinner. I work out of town Monday through Friday and live in a hotel, which is making this process even harder. I am already missing my husband and family and don't have the normal distractions you would have in your own home to keep you from thinking of HUNGER! What are some of the "liquids" you've been told to drink? My BMI is very high and I want to do everything I can to shrink my liver and avoid being cut open! Any advice would be much appreciated! Does your hotel have a fitness area? If so, get on the treadmill and WALK. There's something you can do to keep yourself busy, no matter what your size. I would ask your doctor what you should be drinking. There may be things you shouldn't have. Good Luck!!

"All liquid" diet with fruit, meat and salad? Interesting. I can't really relate as I had LapBand in August of 06 and had to do a 3 day clear liquid diet to shrink my liver pre-operatively. I too had a very high BMI of 71 weighing in at 402#. I can't say what liquids you are supposed to be taking, only your surgeon's office or nutritionist should be able to tell you that as every surgeon is different. Give them a call and check it out. As far as being out of town- I suggest walking to see the sights of the city, to meet new people, window shop, go to a museum, anything to distract yourself from your emotional and physical hunger. Following a restricted diet is difficult while travelling as well, but, you need to keep in mind that post-operatively you will be doing this for the rest of your life. Ensure your hotel rooms have a fridge, go to the grocery immediately upon arrival with your WLS appropriate foods, use the hotel gym or swim in the pool and try to stay focused on the future and what you can have and do with a positive mindset. Good luck to you, Dawn Vickers, RN, BLC

Anything liquid that doesn't have sugar or caffinated is best at this time.. It will get you ready for after surgery.,. I was able to loose about 30 pounds prior to going on the 14 day liquid diet, by eating more protein, no sugars (not even natural) I used a lot of sugar free jellos and puddings. I would mix my sugar free puddings with my shakes. Carnation instant breakfast comes in sugar free and I have since surgery added a spoonfull of peanutbutter and splenda with my drink.. it tastes just like reese cup.. If you are in a hotel through the week you could get some tuna, chicken, or any other high protein foods to take with you..the more protein the more weight you will be able to loose also.. I also watched my carbs, I wouldn't eat anything that had more than 19g of carbs in it.. I hope this helps.. Take care, the 14 days will be gone before you know it.. :) God bless you Paula

I'm on the dreaded 14 day liquid diet too. I've been doing lots of iced herbal tea, and also Chicken broth. I have to do 7 SF Carnation instant breakfasts, and then three liquid food choices...Like SF pudding, or unsweet applesace, or cream soup. It is really rough, but I just have to keep telling myself that It'll be worth it. I bought a cool little lunch bag at Target ( with pink flowers! ) and little shaker bottles that make it much handier when I work my 12 hour shifts. Also, I found a cool Water bottle. Those kind of motivate me. I figure it's just gonna be two weeks of awful, and then I hopefully won't want to eat:) You can do anything for only two weeks, right? Also keeping a food? ( liquid ) journal kinda helps too. Hang in there! I"m struggling too, but we can do it!

I agree with the other folks that you should have your medical team approve any dietary choices. But I would like to pass on a recommendation for AFTER your surgery. There is a high protein pudding that is completely portable and tastes good. You can get it at GNC or www.instonenutrition.com. Choc, van and banana. 6.4oz, 100 cals and 20g of protein. Not a liquid but is a wonderful small volume high protein source. A good liquid protein is Isopure. Also at GNC but please be careful with liquid proteins. Hard on your kidneys if you chug too much at once. My medical professionals say not more than 25g at one sitting. Best of luck. There is a whole new life waiting for you!

I read about all these posts about preop liquid diets, or other diets. My surgeon did not recommend any kind of specific diet prior to surgery. The only thing he said was that the day before I should eat "light"...soups and things like that. I wonder why some want these crazy diets beforehand and others don't. I guess it is a matter of personal opinion.

Morning ShannyM, when I was on the LSD diet I drank boost diabetic. It taste really good and comes in 3 different flavors. It also has 16grams of protein.I also cheated and ate to peices of meat if I still felt hungary and still lost 13 pounds in two weeks. I would really try and stick with the diet cause it does make a difference. When is your surgery? I had mines Feb 21,2008 and Im down 43 pounds. Good luck and hit me up if you have anymore questions.

Thank you all for being so kind and reassuring! I just found this site yesterday and I know it's going to help me not only get through the LSD untill my April 22, 2008 surgery, but I know I'll also be hooked through my recovery and weightloss! I was worried about not being able to attend my hospital's WLS Support Groups after surgery due to working out of town during the week, because I know they are vital. Now I've found you all! Please keep all the great information coming!!!!!

I think it is easier to have just liquids then some liquids and some regular foods. Ask your doc if you can do that. You have a lot of incentive to do the liquids religeously besides the prospect of being cut open, the weight you lose pre-surgery will be added to the 25 pounds you will immediately lose after surgery. I did not have to do the diet either because of low BMI but I wish I had done it anyway. Everyone else is a lot farther than I am even now. It really pays off.

LET ME JUST ENCOURAGE YOU TO FOLLOW THIS LIQUID DIET. yOU ARE GOING IN FOR MAJOR SURGERY AND THIS IS JUST THE FIRST PART OF MANY CHANGES YOU WILL BE MAKING. SHRINKING YOUR LIVER WILL JUST HELP YOUR CHANGES OF A LAPROSCOPIC SURGERY WHICH IS WAY BETTER THAN A OPEN RYN! THE DOCTOR IS NOT TRYING TO MAKE YOU SUFFER, RATHER HELP YOU HAVE A SAFFER SURGERY. YOU CAN DO THIS! YOUR HEALTH IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO CONSIDER! KEEP YOUR HEAD UP, IT'S ONLY A SHORT TIME! CONGRATULATIONS...YOU WILL DO GREAT!
