Question:
I am one week post-op today and can't seem to drink the protein drinks. Help.

Is there any other options to get the protein in other than the protein shakes? Any particular soup???    — karmie001 (posted on February 4, 2008)

I could not tolerate the shakes at all either. If you can drink milk there is 8g protein to 8oz milk. You can also buy Whey Protein tastelss powder. It's not 100% tasteless but you can barely taste it. You can also make tomato soup with milk instead of water and that adds protein. You can add the tasteless protein to just about anything you eat or drink. 1 scoop is 21g. Just a few suggestions. I am almost 5 mo out and still have a hard time getting in the protein. Just make sure you are getting in your fluids. Good luck!

My surgeon give us a booklet that includes recipes. The one I liked the best was a soup. It consisted of 1/2 c. cottage cheese, 1/2 c. cream of chicken soup (or any creamed soup: mushroom, celery, even cheese) with some chicken broth to thin it out. Blend until smooth and strain it. Then heat up and enjoy. Good luck.

I had a hard time finding a protein that I liked. I finally settled on www.unjury.com and they offer a unflavoried. Adding protein powders to soup did not work for me as they can not be heated over 125 degrees. You might try just getting more cottage cheese and skim milk down. It is important because when I slacked off, my hair started to come out. I force myself now, and some days are easier than others. Best of sucess to you! Just do yoiur best.

I couldn't tolerate the shakes but found some protein shots (liquid protein in a tube type vile). You can get them either 42 g or 24 g and in flavors like orange, grape, fruit punch, etc. I mix 21-24 g with water and powdered Country Time lemonade mix (sugar free) and add ice and it is really a delicious drink. That way I get my protein and liquid. They can also be taken straight but are pretty sweet for that. Don't try to do more than 24 g at a time because your body can only absorb 25 g at a time. Enjoy. They are found in vitamin shops, Health food stores and I'm sure you can find them online. C. Garber

Try carnation instant breakfast sugar free it is really good and i used to make it and freeze it so i could have a frozen treat. Also egg drop soup is very high in protein. Special K water that is flavored is another good choice. if you like fish this is a wonderful source of protein when you can begin to eat solid foods.

Yes. There is a protein capsule on the market called "Capsul-Pro." You can get it at www.nashuanutrition.com It works really well, and it doesn't cause any bloating...

As Julie stated, the protein powder is called AnyWhey tasteless protein powder. You can buy it GNC. They have a new powder that is in a variety of powders that are really good as well. It's called Designer whey. Put in in a bottle of water and it is REALLY good. If you have the protein powder that tastes horrible, try mixing it with water instead of milk. It's more tolerable that way. I am 10 months out and can't tolerate Body Fortress mixed with milk, but I can if I mix it with water. With milk it give you more protein, but it's also much more filling. Good luck, God bless and welcome to the losing side--it WILL get better! Hang in there!

You want to get on this right away. Protein is critical to healing. When I was a brand new postop, I couldn't STAND Vanilla or Chocolate (way too sweet). I went to GNC and got Designer Whey Protein Shakes in the fruit flavors (orange mango tastes kind of like Tang). I also got unflavored protein and (if this is ok with your doctor, check it out first) took 50/50 tomato juice and water, mixed the protein with a little bit of it to disolve it and then heated the rest separately to hot but NOT BOILING. I would then add lots of Old Bay Seasoning and a small shake of parmesan cheese. I had this for my dinner every night while I was on liquids. Good Luck!

Congratulations Karmela and welcome to the loosing side. There is a fruit protein drink made by Isopure Zero Carbs. You can mix it with water if you don't like the taste by itself. I'm almost a year out and I still drink them. The flavors I drink are Apple Melon, Alpine Punch and Grape --stay away from the orange or any of them with orange -- NASTY. Each bottle has 40 grams of protein. Good Luck

I am three months out and I had trouble also. I found a product named Nectar-fuzzy navel flavor. It mixes with water and tastes like orange juice. I mix it with unsweetened lemonade and it is delicious. Honest. I got it over the internet. I also think the OH store sells it as well. Also I love ff philly cheese. Five grams protein for 30 calories. I scoop it up with 5 or 6 gold fish. Also bean dip has a lot of protein and few calories. I added it to my soups for taste. Hope this helps. Pat

I am just six days out and I am sick to death of the protein shakes already. I split them up and drink them like a shot at different times during the day. But the milk option is the best for me so far and beef broth- which is less protein. Good Luck!

I totally understand what you are going through! I was doing GREAT for the first 3 weeks and then all of a sudden Kaboom! Couldn't stand the protein drinks anymore. I think I have tried every mix on the market. Because I was really stressed about the whole thing - I think I was on the phone with my nut everyday. She had me try a couple of things, and the main thing she suggested was adding protein to whatever I was drinking/eating. So I bought some unflavored soy protein, and added a little bit to V8 juice, broth, creamed soup. I was surprised as to how much I was able to get in! The best advice I got from her was to freeze it and eat it like an italian ice! It was really good that way too! Another suggestion was to drink milk/soymilk in between meals. That gives you added protein. It is still totally a struggle for me, but I keep just reminding myself that it will get better....it just has to!!! Oh, it is true - all the NECTAR products are pretty good - a little on the sweet side - but VERY GOOD!!! Good Luck!!!

What have you tried and how did you make it up? Then, what happens?

I had to go to a nutrition class before surgery and she said to add refried beans to your soups. It has a lot of protein and is very filling and doesn't really change the taste. Also peanut butter is a good source. I am 8 weeks out an have lost 51 pounds!
