Question:
I am 11 days post op and still having trouble with protein. How much damage
have I done to myself so far. I am a few grams shy of my protein on a daily basis and afraid that I am hurting myself by not getting enough protein in. I am so afraid. Has anyone tried the Special K protein water. Is that any good and how much protein does that have. Is it worth trying? I have not found a powder that I can stomach. Knowing that I have to add that is keeping me from wanting to eat, so I don't know what is worse. Please help... — MissieBey (posted on December 16, 2007)

If you dislike the powders, you could try Pro-Stat 64. It's available
on-line or some CVS pharmacies have it. It's 15 grams of protein per ounce.
I've heard that the wild cherry is the best flavor. Most people that use
this, hold their nose when they drink it, as the taste is the best in the
world. But you do have to get protein in at your stage past surgery. Soon
you'll be able to eat foods too. When you can eat, try the dried peas,
available at health food stores. Cheap, and they have 6 grams of protein
per 1/4 cup.

The protein is very important, as you know. How about something like Unjury
- they have a chocolate that is to die for, and a warm chicken soup. Stay
away from the strawberry - yuck! They also have an unflavored that you can
add to other things, that gives 20 Gms of protein per scoop. I like it -
it's not grainy or over sweet.

Sorry, Melissa, I forgot to add in my previous post that you can order
Unjury online at www.unjury.com, and they have sample of their products
that you can try.

My doctor told me that when I first went home hydration was the most
important thing to make sure happens. He said that if in the beginning I
didn't manage to get all the protein in then it would be okay, but to not
go too long without getting with and sticking to the protein program, so to
speak. You've probably not hurt anything at this point but do get to it
soon. Sometimes when I can't bring myself to have a shake at one sitting
I'll mix the shake then take a sip or two and put it in the fridge, then
next time I go in the kitchen or feel thirsty I'll have a few more sips. I
don't drink anything else until it's gone though so that I'm not washing
the protein through me without getting the benefit. Good luck &
blessings, Leslie

Remember, whey is the best protein for us gastric bypass patients! Best
powder in the world-- Anywhey tasteless protein powder can be bought at
GNC. It gives you 17 grams of protein per scoop. It isn't 100% tasteless,
but it is about 90-95% tasteless and can be put in hot foods/liquids and
even put in things to bake! From my understanding, keep the receipt and if
you can't tolerate this even after trying it, take it back to GNC. I was
using Body fortress and almost threw it up after 2 weeks. After I switched
to Anywhey, I've been using that since. Most of the non powder protein's
are not whey, so be very careful. It does get better so hang in there!
Good luck, God bless and welcome to the losing side!

I'm just over two months out and have trouble ingesting anything, let alone
protein. I've tried everything recommended and find most of it
intolerable. Given the fact that I vomit almost everything I eat, I needed
something that packed the most punch in small doses so I opted for IDS
New-Whey Liquid Protein. They come in 25 and 42 gm tubes. Do the math.
Good luck,
Tom

If your only a few grams shy of meeting your daily requirement, it sounds
like you are doing just fine. All you can do is the best you can. To answer
about the Special K Protein water, I would say don't bother! It doesn't
have enough protein in it to waste the money! I've never tried it, but I
have picked it up and LOOKED at it in the store. Not a good choice in
"my book"........ Some of the "Nectar" powders are ok,
I like the "Roadside Lemonade" and the "Twisted Cherry"
flavors. I too had a VERY hard time with "protein". Good Luck !

I drink the Special K protein water very often, I wouldnt use it as the
only way your getting your protein though. I think its good, I get the
strawberry kiwi kind. I have the others but I haven't tried them yet. Here
is something I use all the time "Resource Beneprotein Instant Protein
Powder" go to www.walgreens.com and add that in to your search area.
Its powder and it has no taste to it and I add it to everything I eat and
drink. Its high on the protein. Also while your there type this is in...
"Resource Optisource Mini Nutrition Bar, Chocolate" (Now you
cant have that yet I know, but later on). Its not like the nasty kind you
get and I am a very leery when it comes to those kind things but these are
good very small and has 12 grams protein in it. I have three ways to eat
them that someone suggested to me, right from the pack (its like a candy
bar), freeze it (its like a fudge pop) and microwave it for 15sec (its just
like a brownie). I'm like you there is no powder that I like I just cant
handle it, there is also something called ISOprue everyone likes it. I've
tried it its ok, not my favorite thing but I can tolerate it if I have to
but personally its like drinking a wet paper towel lol. Unjury is good on
their site there is a area where you can buy samples I would do that, it
lets you taste test a lot of things before you spend a lot of money on
things you don't like. Its www.unjury.com. I hope that helps you. I wish
you the best of luck! Happy Holidays!

I know they tell us we will lose hair no matter what, but the first couple
months I didn't get all the protein in that I was supposed to and I lost
1/3 of my hair! (small price to pay though in my opinion) BUT as soon as I
started being adamant about my protein my hair started growing back. I made
all kinds of shakes--- sometimes cherry with splenda, nf milk, Ice, and a
little almond flavoring with a small scoop of unsweetened cocoa powder. But
my favorite is 1/2 cup nf milk, 1/2 cup orange juice, 2 splenda packets,
handful of ice and a tsp of vanilla extract and a scoop of Isopur Zero carb
protein powder in vanilla flavor. Pulse it in the blender and it tastes
like Orange Julius! mmmm... there are all kinds of recipes out there for
shakes. Also, you could get from GNC the Isopure Zero carb clear drinks,
they come in a glass bottle and have a lot of protein in them too. It will
get better! I will be a year out on Dec 27th and believe me, just learn to
get "creative" with your cravings. This sounds kinda bad, but
sometimes I crave chips (which I can't eat) like Doritos, so I lick a
few... takes care of the craving! If I am craving pizza I will take a
little mozzarella cheese and melt it in the microwave and sprinkle garlic
powder on it. Tastes like pizza to me!!! lol :) You will learn all
kinds of little tricks, don't worry! And if you're worried about your hair
I would start using Mane & Tail shampoo from Sally's Beauty Supply---
that helped my hair grow back! Good luck and hang in there!

I wouldn't bother with the Special K. I got Isopure fruit drinks that pack
about 40grams of protien to 20oz. You'll have to get them from your health
food store. I know GNS carries it, but I found it cheaper at CNO, a local
health food store. I also made SF Jello with unflavored protien, and SF
Butterscotch pudding with NF milk and 2 scoops of Gold Std Vanilla Ice
Cream whey protein isolate. I'm only 4 days out, and this is sitting
pretty well on my pouch. My dr said as long as I'm taking my vitamins and
getting my liquids in, as the pouch acclimates, it will accomodate all of
the protein, and not to worry.
So if you're still nervous, contact your nutritionist, or Dr's office.
Hope this helps,
Kat

Since you need protein for the rest of your life, you might want to try a
few other brands/recipes and see if you can find your match. What have you
tried and how did you make them up? Any of these are what I use:
1.) Champion ProScore 100 choco + 8 oz water + ice, blended (hand blender
or Magic Bullet).
2.) Champion Pure Whey Stack choco + 6-8 oz water, shaken.
3.) IDS vanilla-cinnamon + "glop" of DaVinci sugar free caramel
sauce + 8 oz water + ice, blended.
4.) the PWS chco + the van-cin (50/50) in about 10 oz hot water, stirred or
hand blender.
Lately I've been adding a shake of cinnamon to my hot ones since cinnamon
fights belly fat.
I always put 1 scoop of UpCal D powder in (500mg calcium citrate, 250 IU of
vit D3).
