Question:
Protein
I am two weeks postop RNY and having trouble getting my protein supplements in. The taste is so bad they make me gag and vomit. I am going to try to start the blended today and I am beginning to wonder how in the world I will be able to get in enough protein once I do start eating. I am new at this and need some help. I have talked to my dietician and still trying to figure it out. Can anyone give me any help on this? Thanks... — t_roxus (posted on November 6, 2007)

I know the feeling, I use to like them, funny know they make me sick. I
started eating cottage cheese with fruit in unsweetened fruit cocktail. can
you eat eggs yet ? I could soft scramble with some cheese. spaghetti sauce
with some ricotta and cooked ground turkey or chicken really finely
grounded if you can eat it or leave out the chiken or turkey if you cant.
and top with a little mozzarella. finely chopped boiled egg salad ? It
depends on what stage your at and what you like to eat, I use to hate
cottage cheese now I eat it only with fruit cocktail. Some people's Dr.
have certain stages they let them progress to. The 3rd day I was at the
hosp. I was allowed pureed foods. Some are not allowed this so early. they
are on liquids still so it all boils down to what your allowed and what you
like to eat. I am sorry if not to much help. Sabrina

Same thing happened to me. Someone on here mentioned Any Whey Tasteless
protein powder. It is not 100% tasteless, but about 90%, and I was able to
tolerate that with no problem the very first day I switched. I put it in
crystal light mostly, but I now use it in many things. It can be bought at
GNC in both small containers and large containers. To buy it online you
have to pay shipping and handling charges. Welcome to the losing side,
good luck and God bless!

It will take a little while to get things evened out. I used the wal-mart
vanilla powder protein and blended it with yogurt. My battle was always,
get in all my water or all my protein but could never get in both. It all
evens out and now I am in a routine that by the time I am off work I have
all my water and protein in. Anything I have after work is additional. More
then happy to help any way I can.
Happy Weight Loss! You've made a great new life choice.

There is protein capsules on Nashua.com, they are pricey but you could use
to supplement the difference of what your lacking from food. Ask your
surgeon first if he approves. :O)
Also for tasty recipes with alot of protein in most you can go to
lowcarbrecipe.com, Hope this helps some, I think most of us try very hard
to get it all in. :O)

I am almost 8 weeks out and I cannot do protein shakes at all. I bought the
unflavored whey protein, as someone mentioned earlier, and mix it with my
diet hot cocoa or my SF Carnation Inst breakfast made with milk. It is
virtually tasteless and I can actually tolerate it. I was really getting
worried and it took me a week to even get up the nerve to try it! :) If
you like milk, there are 8g of protein in an 8oz glass. Try cheese, eggs,
beans, cottage cheese, SF frozen yogert may have some or SF ice cream. I'm
assuming you are still on pureed foods. Refried beans are good with some
cheese and sour cream. All protein! You can put cheese on a scrambled egg,
even some sour cream. I know it sounds gross, but it actually is very good.
Just a few things I have tried and have worked. Good luck!!

I use Beneprotien which has no taste with crystal light. I put 5 scoops
which gives me 30 grams of protien to 16 oz of water. You can find
beneprotien on the internet.

I found the unjury unflavored or even the choc flavored mixed with the sf
instant pudding makes it alot easier to go down. i am 6 months out and have
at least one pudding a day which gives me a total of about 16-20 grams of
protein at one time. Good luck, and welcome aboard.

Any of these are what I use:
1.) Champion ProScore 100 choco + 8 oz water + ice, blended (hand blender
or Magic Bullet).
2.) Champion Pure Whey Stack choco + 6-8 oz water, shaken.
3.) IDS vanilla-cinnamon + "glop" of DaVinci sugar free caramel
sauce + 8 oz water + ice, blended.
4.) the PWS chco + the van-cin (50/50) in about 10 oz hot water, stirred or
hand blender.
Lately I've been adding a shake of cinnamon to my hot ones since cinnamon
fights belly fat.
I always put 1 scoop of UpCal D powder in (500mg calcium citrate, 250 IU of
vit D3).

Have you tried the ISOPURE Zero Carb protein drinks. They are liquid --
not chalky. You can mix them with water to start, I've been drinking them
for 8 months and now drink them without water. When I started drinking
them I'd mix it with water and could get past the taste. If you like the
Celestial seasonings teas you can mix it with those as well. I only by
three flavors -- Apple Melon, Alpine Punch and Frosty Grape. The orange is
HORRIBLE and I haven't tried any of the others. I believe the apple melon
I mixed with the Celestial seasonings apple cinnamon tea. It's a 20 oz
glass bottle and 40 grams of protein -- that's over half the protein you
will need for the day.
I don't get all mine in either, but I try with Dr Atkins shakes and bars --
at least with those 2 I get in about half of it and whatever I eat in the
evening I get more.

I have open RNY and had a similar struggle, and was very afraid. After a
few weeks of trying this and that I found IsoFruit Delite. It is a watery
fruit juice flavored protein drink. 1 scoop is 21 G of protein, in about
6-8 oz of water. it tastes good, has no perceptible odor and is easy enough
that i drink it every day without hating it! It's hard to find on the
internet but I ordered mine from http://www.discountanabolics.com (I do not
work for them! disclaimer) and received it very promptly. Please email me
ifyou want me to mail you a little taste for you to try.

hope this helps -- the suppliments are supposed to only be taken while on
your liquid phase -- protein helps with healing -- after, when you are back
eating normal again you whould get all your protein intake from food
--tuna, chicken, dairy, cheese, pork, steak, whatever -- you will not and
should not be taking suppliments for the rest of your life -- this is only
a stepping stone -- good luck

Hello, I know the protein junk is yucky!!! I've tried alot of different
supplements and always go back to the Isopure Liqiud. It's easy, no mixing
and they come in a variety of flavors. The bottle is 40g protein. Good

I had the same problem actually, I still fight the protein battle because
most all meat makes me vomit and I refuse to waste my money on the protein
shakes because they taste like crap. I have found that Hot and Sour soup
from the local chinese restaruants is not only cheap. Not to bad as far as
calories goes, but it is LOADED with protein. I can eat 1/2 pint of it now
and that is 150 calories and 30 grams of protein. Just a thought.

1 and half ounces of skim milk with one scoop Smoothie King Vanilla
Protein, a little ice and blend in the Magic Bullet machine. It is OK and
you can swallow it pretty fast. I do this twice a day(48g). I also put
fat free cheese in my creamed soups and occasionally a T of Frito Bean Dip.
I get 70 g a day and I am only 2 weeks out. Good luck! Pat
