Question:
weight gain after surgery

I just had an open ryn and i weighed 225 just before and I got home today and I weight 7 lbs more. How can that be when I only had clear liquids and not much because I had a horrible time with nauseation.    — susiewong (posted on September 3, 2007)

My surgeon told me some people gain up to 21 pounds because they pump you so full of fluid. you didn't say how long you were in the hosoital, but I assume it was no more then 3 days. You are on the 1st or 2nd stage diet. There is no way you can't lose. Just hang in there and it will come off. Otherwise they wouldn't perform the operation. Good Luck

Hey LuLu.....they pump your bod with fluid and gas during surgery to "puff" your body up to get to all of the things they need to. U will be fine. I was 10+lbs heavier when I came home. Once you start recovering - the lbs. come off. Don't worry. it's normal. Congrats on surgery and good luck!

Haven't had my surgery yet, but the nutritionist did say that I should expect to see an increase in my weight because of the IV's they'll pump me up with. When you're up to it will you share more of your experience with me?

I had a laparscopic Lap Band surgery one month ago and when I came home from the hospital, I was 5 pounds heavier than I was before I left. Don't worry it will come off. It takes awhile to get rid of everything they pump into you. Lynda

I gained 19 lb overnight in hospital...from all the IV fluids. My BP went really low (50/34) so they gave me lots of extra fluid to bring it back up. Kept me in hospital 3 extra hours but at 1 week post op, I was down about 4 lb.

Don't feel to bad, it will come off quickly...I was weighed the morning of surgery by my doctor and I was 230 and I went home the next day and I weighed myself and I had gained 13 pounds I almost died! But it came off fast and it will for you too. Good Luck and God Bless

IV fluids and such are what's giving you that false weight. Give it a week and you'll probably dump about a dozen pounds! Average should be about 5 per week so don't panic! All the non-eating you're doing now and before will catch up with your body and BAM! off it will come....patience it will come off! Good Luck on the road to being a BIG LOSER!

I agree with all the others, I ma a clinic coordinator for a program and also a former patient. You are given so many fluids via I.V. and you body id bloated from all the manipulation it has undergone. You will loose the weight, and the bloated feeling will go away altogether by the 3-4 week
