Have a friend a witness who had safe succesful WLS. The good news is in
general blood isnt necessary. You should be able to find a surgeon. best
wishes on your new life!

You didn't mention your religion, but my Dr. mentioned at the seminar on
Saturday that many Jehovah's witnesses have this done wiht no problems.
Barring that, you could donate your own blood in advance and have it on
standby if you need it. Would that work as far as your religious
restrictions apply?
Good luck,

Can you have them take your own blood in advance and store it for you prior
to surgery and simply use that blood if needed? I know that in the case of
my lap band, no blood was needed at all anyway.

My surgeon is Dr. Warnock, located in Wichita Falls, TX. He's a very
religious man himself and respectful of other folk's religions. He did my
open RNY 6 weeks ago and there was no need for a blood transfusion. If you
like, you can check out his website: http://www.bariatricsoftexas.com

Either these suggestions or hey, die for your beliefs! One must draw the
line somewhere!!! That's surely a faith tester, no?

I am puzzled. Why would you need a transfusion? I don't know anyone that
did. Find a doctor that does the surgery laproscopricly if you haven't
already. I have four tiny incisions about 1 inch long and a drain site
maybe 1/4 inch if that. I had RNY. My aunt had lap band and had hers lapro
too. Good Luck and God Bless, Norma

You may not need 'addidtional' blood during the surgery -- if all goes
normally. But things don't always go normally and that's when you need to
be prepared, either to meet and rectify the emergency or to meet your
maker. Can you use your own blood? It's called "autologus". You
can arrange with your medical/surgical team to use autologus blood that is
taken from your own body at your local Red Cross facility. You have to PAY
for this service and it takes time (several weeks/months) to collect enough
to satisfy what your surgeon thinks your needs might be. I did this not for
religious reasons but because I didn't want someone else's "bad"
blood getting into my system and leaving me with some unthinkable/incurable
bug that would make me wish I'd never had the surgery. Go talk to the Red
Cross about this -- and your minister.

There is a synthetic blood on the market that I have heard of JWs using.
Try looking into that. Self donation probally isn't an option either, huh?
If memory serves that is not acceptable (I work on the cardiac floor of a
hospital). Good luck!

we have surgeons in our program that will let you sign a waiver not to get
blood, in 99 percent of the cases you would never need it but in case of a
bleed, you may need it but it is your decision as to whether or not to take
it. You have the right as a patient to refuse any medical treatment you do
not want be it an xray, blood or anything else.

My doctor did it with no blood. He's in Dallas, plus the way it's done
it's without hardly any bleeding. Check Baylor Hospital in Dallas. Dr.
