Question:
Can anyone help with a hair crisis?
I have numerous hair problems. The one that concerns me the most is the way that it looks. It looks dirty, even after I've just washed it. Some shampoos make this worse, but it always looks like I haven't washed it for days. Is there anything that I can do to remedy this. Am I missing something in my diet? Is there a vitamin that I can talk to my doctor about or is there a shampoo that can help. I've tried 5 different shampoos and none of them really worked. Thanks for the help. — posprudence (posted on May 7, 2007)

Cassandra,
Maybe increase your protein and talk to your beautician -- they may have
some suggestions.

Make sure that you are getting the proper level of protein in your diet.
That you are also taking your vitamins. Take Biotin (B-vitamin that is for
nails, skin and hair). If you are already doing this, then talk to a good
reputable hairdresser to see what she recommends....

Cassandra, I would talk with a beautician about this. Maybe they can give
you an idea of what to do. Tell them you don't want to have to buy
expensive stuff, but you have hair issues. I have personally never head of
this being a wls issue. I still lose hair after 3 years, and I have a wave
to my hair now that used to be perfectly straight, which I find odd, but
never a dingy look after surgery. You don't say if this was a problem
prior to surgery. Either way, it won't hurt to get a hair cut and wash and
talk to someone who does work with hair every day. Pick a good salon so
you will get someone with experience and good advice. Or you can call a
cosmotology school and speak with them as well. Maybe an instructor will
look at your hair and have some advice. Take care, Patricia P.

Cass, you'll need to increase your Protein intake first but then add Biotin
1000mg with a 50mg of Zinc (It helps the body absorb the Biotin). But No
more zinc as it could burn the inner lining of your stomach.

I don't see why protein would have anything to do with your hair looking
dirty. I am almost 4 years out and I am pregnant. This happens to me when
I am pregnant--it is like within a few hours my hair has a funny smell and
is getting greasy! I don't know what causes it either--but thankfully with
me it is mainly a pregnant thing. Something that has helped me is adding
blonde color--it gives my hair more body and dries it up a little. Also I
use Selson Blue shampoo with is not for a dry scalp but for Seborrheic
dermatitis which usually causes the skin/hair to look a little greasy and
scaly or flaky. I also use daily clarifying shampoo which seems to clean
the grease out better and lasts longer. If you have any questions please
email me:)

Cassandra- I am having the exact same problem. I wrote in about a month ago
and no one responded to me so it was interesting to read your responses.
The tips they gave did not make a difference. I take biotin and hair, skin
& nail vit. every day and do great with my protien so that doesn't
change. I also have gone to two high end salons here in my area and they
have no clue. One place had me spend a lot of money on special shampoo and
then it made the oily spots worse but dried the heck out of my ends. If you
get anything that works I would love to hear about it.
Thanks,

I take (2) 1000mg of Biotin daily, (2) 200mg of Vitamin E daily. Try Nexuss
products like the Therappe shampoo, Humectress conditioner, and the
Emergencee. These products are awesome for your hair. A little pricey but
well worth the money. Don't forget your daily protein, protein, protein
very important.

Cassandra,
Using a little bit of baby powder helps absorb the oil in your hair if it
gets greasy. Just rub some on your hands and then rub it thru your hair.
Don't know of any great shampoo that would work for you , but I use Biolage
and they have for several different hair types. Hope this helps.

You may want to seek a referral to a dermatologist on this. I am not sure
what the problem is so hard to offer any solution. I have fine blonde hair
and have to wash it every morning (even if I've washed the night before) as
it looks greasy and clumpy to me. I'd avoid adding any kind of product or
even conditioner to your hair. Hair is not a living thing--by the time
it's long enough for us to see, it's long dead....so no amount of vitamins
or minerals will change it, but it sounds like your issue is a scalp (skin)
problem that you are seeing manifested through your hair. I'd ask to see a
good dermatologist.

I've had great success with tea tree shampoo by Eden Products. It's all
natural. I use the conditioner too. It doesn't smell great but after
using it for a few weeks, my hair looks great. I've had very little hair
loss but lots of thinning. I found this shampoo online. I also just tried
shampoo by Kiss My Face which I bought at a Harmon's Drug Store...It was
about $5.

Cassandra, It may just be hair product build-up. I use Aveda shampoo
products. They're pricier than what you can get at the grocery store, but a
little goes a long way and I can really tell a difference. They have a
clarifying shampoo that I use once a month called "hair
detoxifier". It really works.
