Question:
Female question

I have been on Lo Orval birth control for a little over 2 months now and have noticed that I start spotting a week before my period is due... what's going on? Is my body just unsure what to do because I had irregular periods for so long being super obese and now I have lost 115 lbs--- does anyone know what's going on?    — airbear762000 (posted on April 16, 2007)

Is there a reason you aren't calling your doctor that gave you the medication? Just a thought!

I had a difficult time getting my cycle straight post-op too. At first my gyno put me on Yaz (who names this crap? lol) which is supposedly a really low-dose pill. It didn't work. I was spotting all month - not fun! So she upgraded me to Yasmin which seems to be working but it took about 3 months...every month got a little better. I just celebrated my 1 yr post-op a couple weeks ago so I don't have much more experience to share, other than you're not alone! But definitely talk to your doctor because you shouldn't have to suffer. Congrats on the weight loss! ~Sarah in VA

I really hate to be a downer but I have been in your boat. I have lost almost 200lbs in 17 months and that sent my hormones into overdrive. My period went crazy and this past month I finally got it under control. My GYN put me on a strong and chewable pill called Femcon. The placebo pill also contain iron which is nice because with all of this extra bleeding we are loosing our iron stores.

Estrogen, estrogen, estrogen!!! There is a link between body fat and estrogen. The more body fat you have, the more estrogen your body makes. As your body fat changes, your hormones change. It's probably the combination of birth control and the large amount of weight you've lost that is responsible. Get in touch with your doctor... it might be helpful to have blood tests to see where you are in terms of estrogen and other sex hormones. You may want to use a 2nd form of birth control while your body is adjusting... just in case. :) Best wishes. (and congrats on the 115lb loss!!!)

Sometimes taking a new birth control medicine can cause spotting or inregular periods. You might just want to ask your doctor. Take care.

Thanks to everyone who is supportive here in helping to answer my question, but to Diane-- was it really necessary to be so snide? If you didn't have anything positive to add, why even bother answering. I have been on this web-site for a few months now and I have never had anyone be negative to me, so here's a first I guess. And just for your information Diane, I tried to get in to see my Dr and it will be 3 weeks until he's available so I thought that just MAYBE I could get some support here.
