Question:
A question about alcohol consumption
I just had a thought the other night after drinking a half of a daquairi and being questioned about who had been drinking by the gate guards on base when we came home LOL As I said I only consumed about half of a strawberry daquairi and was wondering if when they were questioning who had been drinking and wanted me to blow, would I blow higher than a normal person since it affects me so much differently. I only drank half of it because I was starting to get tipsy!!!! Don't worry, I was NOT driving, a friend of mine was, but this sparked my curiosity!! — cedsangel (posted on March 30, 2006)

First of all Aimee C why are you interogating here?THis is a board where
you are supposed to be able to ask anything and feel no embarrasment at
all....It is related to WLS because they are wondering if the smaller pouch
has anything to do with how quickly alchohol is consumed...before you go
breaking anyone down relax yourself....to the person who posted....I do not
believe it would affect that it....your body still breaks down the alchohol
the same pace you just feel it faster.....KEEP SMILING! some people live
for a living=)

I have not had the surgery yet.....soon I hope. I was wondering, did you
have a sugar dump with the drink?

This question is definately appropriate! I'd like to know the answer too.
I'm not as familiar with how alcohol affects the RNY as I am with how it
affects the DS. With the DS I know the alcohol will hit faster and harder
than pre-op. The effects also tend to go away quicker! As to how it would
effect someone on a breathalizer???? I'd like to know too! GOOD QUESTION!

Really good question! I was wondering also if it could have been a dump
from the sugar in the drink, I get lightheaded and strange feeling when I
dump, very much like being a bit tipsy. Hey, I've got an idea! Let's
borrow a breathalyzer and we can all meet somewhere and do some experiments
-- Wheeee! Seriously, if anyone has any experience with this, I'm also
very curious about it!

If you drink and have had WLS, the chances are u will get sick or very
drunk. I have known ppl that went into a coma because they drank to much
and they did not have that much. they had to pump her stomach out. I
would think you should question whether or not WLS is good for you becuase
u need to have drinks. If you were a few years out then I could
understand, but if you are less than 3 years, you might now have researched
enough on foods and drinking.

HOOOHOOOOOOOOOOO, can you say chill folks!!!!!?????? I hope that you let
slide everyones negative comments to your question. No one has the right
to judge you or chastize you or your question...the only stupid question is
the one not asked!! Now back to your question...I was told by my surgeon
at the seminar, that yes you would blow higher than a normal person...that
a few of his patients have recieved DUI's after only drink minimal amounts,
because it goes right into your blood stream. And they were thinking of
looking in to the affects more.
Good Girl for not driving!! Take care!

Kay, what an excellent question and one I have asked several doctors. I do
know that after WLS alcohol hits you MUCH fast and MUCH harder than it does
pre-op. I'm over 4 years out and it doesn't get any better. I've asked
this of 3 different doctors, including my surgeon, and no one could give me
a definitive answer. They simply didn't know, although they were aware
that alcohol will effect a WLS patient differently. At least the other
weird booze related issue is that you sober up just as fast. I'm not
really sure this is better. Instead of being told the next day of all the
stupid things you did the night before.....you sober up in the middle of
commiting said stuid act and realize what an a$$ you are making of
yourself. LOL

After the RNY the booze is absorbed directly into the small intestine. It
hits hard and fast! Yes! just ONE drink can get you a DUI, espically with
the .8 standard. I rarely drink but if I got stopped I would demand a blood
test since the time delay might save a DUI since post ops sober up fast
too. DONT RISK YOU LIFE OR OTHERS! Dont drink and drive after WLS!

hey there...I just recently became brave enough to try to drink and found
out that I could consume a beer and a half without any repercussions other
than tooting a bit more than normal. I'm 16 months out. What I notice
from the other postings is that everyone continues to be very individual,
so whatever our choices in lines of consumining alcohol, one must be very
responsible to possible consequences. Try it at home first to see what
your reactions may be. Good Luck and I hope that it is enjoyable for
you.... Allee

Speaking personally, I feel the effects much quicker. I think absorption
depends on how far out you are and if you are suffering from the dreaded
hypertrophy (where you start to absorb more calories from your intestines
adapting to your surgery). That would definitely affect how much gets into
your bloodstream but I'm really not sure how a breathalyzer works, so I
would hate to hypothesize. A word to the wise though - take it easy on
booze. High in calories so you have to worry about 1. dumping, 2.
absorbing those calories, especially once you are two years out or more and
3. it may be affecting you more strongly so while 2 before didn't affect
you much, 2 now could really throw you for a loop and make you a hazard on
the roads. As a personal aside, I found a great beverage called Smirnoff
Ice Ultra 1 with only 1 gram of sugar and 1 gram of carbs and 110 calories
per drink and I find one of those on ice while soaking in the sun never
hurt. :-)

#1 this is a very relavent question. #2, i had surgery back in 2001 and
although i do not know what the legal blow is for intoxication, I do know
that i cannot have an entire mixed drink without getting completely
tipsy!!!LOL, after two, i am toast. So i would be fairly sure that if you
get drunk faster, because you metabolize alcohol different, that you will
blow over the legal limit quicker than others. In fact, in my case i would
have to say that i am probably over the legal limit after a sip or two!! :)
As far as dumping, i have not drank often enough to be able to tell you if
i dumped or not, probably because when i have drank, i got too drunk. I do
know that i was told that it is not very healthy at all for your liver and
all, to drink alcohol after WLS. Because of that, and the drastic hang
over i get for several days after, i basically rarely drink. Maybe once or
twice a year at special occassions, thats it, but i have also gotten very
picky about the good taste of what i am drinking. I wont drink regular
wine or beer because of taste. The up side is that i am usually the
designated driver and get all the props for that one :) hope it helps, and
it was a good question. Kim

Because your plumbing has ben altered, the effects of drinking hit much
faster. This is because the Alcohol is being absorbed directly into the
small instetines, having bypased the normal stomach. I personally have had
problems with the daquairi type of drinks because they usually use a premix
that contains tons of refined sugar. I have experienced horrible dumping
because of this. Stick to the regular drinks is my advise.
